Can I reclaim expenses? Jet2 !

Hi All

We have gladly just arrived home from 28 hour delay from Madeira due to high winds.

Unfortunately, JET2 were appalling and did absolutely nothing - no communication whatsoever, after waiting for 12 hours - and ALL flight being cancelled at Madeira - we were told by the handlers at the airport - to collect our bags and "find yourselves somewhere to stay as all the hotels in the island are fully booked"

We did manage to get what seems like one of the last rooms on the island - and paid for all the expenses ourselves.

I found Jet2 absolutely appalling to just leave all the people to sort themselves out.

My question is - I am assuming we won't get compensation due to the delay being "weather" but can I claim the hotel and expenses back from Jet2?

Advice really appreciated as always!

EU261 duty of care applies irrespective of whether compensation is due or not. You will need to send in your receipts to claim reimbursement (keep copies)
  • You can reclaim reasonable expenses, with receipts. If every hotel on the island was fully booked I'm not sure what Jet2 could have done?

or it could be they do not have accounts with all the hotels on the island and the ones they do have accounts with were full

JET2 - accomodated the previous 2 flights passengers but seemed to forget about us!

I went on booking.com and plenty of hotels came up! Someone else in the airport was told that if a hotel couldn't accommodate all the flight's passengers then it was classed as full! It's been a real palava and some sad stories of elderly and people with babies completely at a loss (and some with no funds to accomodate themselves)

Do you think Jet2 will try to tell us to claim on our travel insurance? Doesn't seem fair to the insurance company!

  • Or maybe there was an odd room or two. Which handful of people would you choose to put in a hotel? Would you be prepared to tell everyone else that sorry, we've only managed to find 4 rooms so everyone else is going to have to stay in the airport?

No, they'll reimburse reasonable expenses as long as you have receipts.

Looking at the fires raging in Madeira at the moment I think you may have been lucky to get back so quickly, the winds for which the island is renowned seem to be really fanning the flames. Jet 2 should reimburse reasonable expenses, probably not the Savoy unless you could prove there wasn't another room anywhere!
