Car hire to visit Republic of Ireland

I need to rent a car in UK for a two week trip to Republic of Ireland. Just wondering if anyone has experience of this and where to go for a good deal. I've searched using the regular sites and found some of the cheapest deals carry a high tariff uplift and a daily charge.

Which ferry route do you want to take the car on?

A lot of UK hire cars stipulate that you can't take them out of the UK, so watch out for the small print

Budget Ireland charge an extra £19.17 + VAT to hire in NI and use in RoI. That appears to be cover for the entire rental period, and not a daily charge. That said, I'm not sure Budget are the cheapest option. Only works if you get a ferry/flight to Belfast though.

Visitors intending to travel across the border to the Republic of Ireland should advise Sixt. Bear in mind that roads signs in the Republic show distances and speed restrictions in kilometres.

Not sure what that means, but no mention of extra charges.

The cheapest option may be a ferry to NI as a foot passenger (IIRC about £20 each way?) and hire here.
  • That just means what it means, distances and speeds switch to kilometres

So many people get caught speeding when crossing the border
  • Just found a deal with Keddy by Europcar which accepts cross border but needs breakdown cover/insurance at £100 for 12 days. Unlimited mileage. Thanks for your responses.

I'm going Fishguard-Rosslare out and Dublin-Holyhead return. There are five of us and one with mobility issues so had to eat car rental/ferry costs.
  • Hey

If you have a car rental already in UK, then you should be able to make arrangements to pick one up in N.I without the extra charge.

But if you will be driving to Ireland/Dublin then you will get the additional tariff. Personally I would not recommend it, it is just too much stress associated with it.

As you want to carry your fishing tools with you, then you might have to pay the premium of ensuring that you are adequately covered as that is it the real reason why the surcharges are rising.
