Is student insurance worth it?

  • Re : Karma insurance - from earlier link
Whilst price seems good It seems they only cover accidental damage and loss NOT theft
    see LINK
    Or am I missing something

Does 'Loss' include Loss by Theft - in insurance speak

If checked the policy wording, and only 2 references to theft
    - so not very clear - to me anyway

    Edit:

It seems it is covered -

    "3. over should include
Theft by Non – Forcible means. People forget to close windows or lock doors. This is often a major problem when living in Communal Accommodation, Communal Blocks, Student Accommodation, Care Holmes, and Shared Accommodation.

You do not know who comes and goes, and when your possessions disappear with no trace how and when it happened. Karma Insurance will cover your possessions loss without you needing to prove any forcible and/ or violent entry or exit. "
  • Make sure you've got a rough idea of how much stuff you've got to insure. I remember in the first year of my undergrad degree, the halls fees also included Endsleigh insurance (halls cover), but the sum didn't even cover the classical music half of my CD collection.

It's worth it if you get enough insurance and then get robbed. Nothing is worse than thinking you're insured and then finding out (the hard way) that you're massively underinsured. Fortunately I wasn't, but know people who were . . .

Thanks for that. It was something I was wondering about and had emailed them about. I would say it's pretty crucial when looking at student insurance.
  • Well in fact I'm waiting for an email from them to clarify the point too

Since what I quoted above was contained in one of their '5 secrets ... " emails,
but that seems at odds with what the site quotes - specifically in relation to laptops -
where it says "Excluding losses whilst left unattended other when in a securely locked premises ..."

I can't square that text with the text in para 3 of the earlier quote

Anyone else who understand insurance speak - please feel free to jump in
  • might be worth checking your parents policy. My daughter has moved into a shared house last week and my insurance covers her provided she locks her room. but reading this thread I am now going to check that she is also covered for fire, flood etc !

  • Sometimes insurance is included in the halls costs - I just found this out by checking Endsleigh site for DS's Uni and halls. don't know how good it is though:confused:

I've had nothing yet, despite their claim/promise to respond in 24 hours !

Most universitys only insure your contents in your Halls room. Best to check with them.

No reply so far and I emailed at the weekend. Not such good customer service. It is a bit off putting. I did find similar info on their website though.

In the grey box entitled Full Theft Cover: No restrictions to forcible and violent entry only. It isn't specific to laptops but you could bring it up in a dispute. I think that was one of your specific worries.
