Is student insurance worth it?

Hey guys,
I'd just like to know what the general opinion is on whether student insurance is worth it (£43 at Saxon is the best deal I have found).
I live in London in Aldgate / Whitechapel which is not the safest of areas but still I am fairly confident that we will not get broken into although there might be a risk of mugging in London.
Any views, past experiences or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks a lot,
Andrew

It's not worth it until you get broken into.I am fairly confident that we will not get broken into
Why? Have you asked the local burglars?
Who said there is no such thing as a silly question?!!Gone ... or have I?0 -
DD is in Halls in Finsbury/Islington which seem pretty secure, but I got her insurance to cover things like laptop damage whilst travelling between Uni sites. It also covers all her worldly goods when they are being transported to and from Halls.
You may need to consider the possibility of fire/water/accidental damage!"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.0 -
1 in 3 students is the victim of a burglary. Yes, you could be in the 66.666% that don't get burgled, but are you willing to take the chance?
Paying £43 for insurance is a lot less than paying £1000+ for computer equipment, books and other possessions if you're unlucky enough to be burgled.0 -
I reckon it depends what you have that is worth nicking & what it would cost to replace it. If you have things that are expensive, particularly portable things, and which you would have to replace if they were stolen then it is certainly worth it. If you have nothing of any real value or if you would be willing to do without whatever valuable items you do have in the event of them being stolen then possibly not.0

I reckon that it is probably a good idea. I didn't insure my possessions in halls last year and I was OK but I always made sure I locked my door even if just going across the corridor. I also knew that my parents insurance gave me some cover. However this year I'm moving into a house and definitely getting it. Have you tried www.karmainsurance.com (they were cheapest for me) or www.cover4insurance.com (they also do good deals)? It's up to you if you want the risk but for less then £2 per month it seems a good idea and you will only regret it if you don't and something happens.0

If you don't take it, sods law is that you will get broken into, sadly.
I was in secure halls for much of my time at uni, in a nice area, and people around me still experienced break-ins.
I would take it, but don't go with Endsleigh whatever you do - while they sell themselves as "the student insurers", I was with them during part of my degree and their customer service was in my experience nothing short of laughable.0 -
At the university of sheffield when living in halls you are automatically given the option of room contents insurance with Endsleigh which was ridiculously cheap in comparison to our rent (about £16 i think). However, one of the girls on my corridor left her door open while in another girls room and a man walked straight in her room. This was only about 11pm and we were all awake and around. He took her phone, laptop and purse then walked straight out. You may blame this on the halls security but the porters had seen him, questioned him and caught him on cctv but when he walked out with laptop under his coat they thought he was conceiling a knife so couldn't confront him. We were always told lock your room if you leave it and as this girls door was open she couldn't claim on insurance.0

Thats odd since Endsleighs brochure given to students specifically claims to cover "walk in" theft -
(can scan you a copy if it helps your case)
"its also reassuring to know that we cover walk in theft - even if you accidentally leave your door unlocked"
Mind you the brochure also claims to offer insurance from just £16 a year - v.difficult to get it approach anything like that figure if you go via their web site
Re : Karma insurance - from earlier link
Whilst price seems good It seems they only cover accidental damage and loss NOT theft
see LINK
Or am I missing something0 -

Depends on the level of cover - the cheapy 'organised by halls' doesn't usually cover things like laptops etc anyway...April Grocery Challenge £81/£1200
