  • I'm with the OP on this, this auto renewal lark needs to be made more prominent. The renewal prices are usually marked up from the previous years policy.
I acknowledge that Auto Renewal does benefit some customers, but should always be a opt in choice at the start of the policy.
They are all trying this lark now, I even had my annual travel insurance & annual car hire excess cover try it on!

Auto-renewal should be banned. The renewal quotes are never competitive and life is too complicated already without having to remember the dates when all these organisations are going to try and rip you off. Some of them will still 'auto-renew' even though you tell them you don't want to!

Why shouldn't they? You agreed to them doing exactly that.

I think you can't read as I stated in my post that I cancelled the auto renewal 2 weeks before they took the money out of my account which under the terms of the agreement I was perfectly entitled to do.

My apologies - I thought your comment was from the OP.

I had the same. The RAC wrote to me in good time to say I would be auto-renewed, and I called them straight away to cancel. They took the money two weeks later anyway. I called them, and got the 'up to a month to refund' answer which, to my shame, I accepted. I should have been more persistent. They did refund it as they promised, but it left a nasty taste.

This is the problem with continuous payment authority. You agree for them to take payments as they see fit, and you're relying on their good nature and efficiency to make sure that you don't get charged for something you don't want. As neilcr found, that is often not the case.

The OP seems to have set up the membership without agreeing to CPA, and that surprises me.
If someone is nice to you but rude to the waiter, they are not a nice person.
  • I mean why should i have to read terms and conditions and policy crap, they term it in phrases that most people wont understand. They never told me about Auto renewal, No email, no letter to state that it was for renewal in a certain amount of days. I assumed that my cover had ended and i got my breakdown included with my insurance, it is only after the 14 days were up that they contacted me for a late payment.

Always use a Direct Debit Mandate. They are far easier to cancel, and if there is an error you go to your bank and they refund you and they get their money back from the originator.

What's complicated? Surely without auto renew you'd still have to remember the date of your car insurance renewal.

This is really good advice, especially when buying AA or RAC cover, I always paid in full with a DD & then cancelled it. Never renew these policies. The best thing is to alternate between them both using Quidco each time. I now have cover with my bank, but remember you have to be on your toes with these companies.
