Economy 10

Options
I am trying to switch my mum from "eon electric economy 10" tariff, to a cheaper standard tariff, I find no one will do this without an engineer making alterations to the meter, has anyone else had this problem or can anyone suggest a way to change supplier.
Thanks in advance.

No help really, but just for info ...
About 6 (?) years ago, we swapped from E7 to 'standard' when we changed to a new supplier.
When the first bill came, we were still being charged as E7.
I phoned to complain only to be told that if we had an E7 meter then we had to be on the E7 tariff! (despite signing up to a standard tariff!!)
I asked if it wouldn't be possible to just add up the day and night readings to give one figure, but sadly, that was "impossible"
"Unless you have a new meter fitted, you can't have the standard tariff"!

EDF energy do a totalizer tariff for E10's (and E7's) where they charge both rates on standard meter unit rates. Your mother would need to call them and speak to their complex meter team to make sure they support the meter in your area first though.
Make £10 per day-
June: £100/£300

Good morning ps2659,

With us we do only have the one tariff available for an economy 10 meter, I can't say what other suppliers can offer.

Economy 10 meters are designed mainly for all electric properties with storage heaters and electric water immersion heaters. They give 10 hours of cheaper off peak electricity in each 24 hour period. This is split into 3 time slots during the afternoon, in the evening and at night as above. To work, meters are wired directly into the heating/water heating circuits at individual properties. Unless manually overridden, this lets them automatically switch the storage heaters on and off during the off peak times.

Multi rate meters, like Economy 10, are only cost effective if a good proportion of electricity is used during the off peak times.

If you did want to look at other tariffs from us, we can look in to changing the meter, this might mean having an independent electrician to check the wiring etc as this can be linked up to the heating.

You may want to have a chat with us about changing the meter and we can give you some more information.

I hope this is helpful.

Thank you

Helena:)

Hi Helena

Thanks for a reply however, after a long conversation yesterday with Eon representatives Colin and Dwayne my mum has decided to have another new meter fitted and back to economy 7, she was first contacted earlier this year to state they were going to change her meter she never recalls being told her tariff was changing to economy 10 she did not have any knowledge about how economy 10 worked and did not know the hours available for the off peak periods, we also feel that being on economy 10 restricts her from obtaining quotes from other companies, whilst she has been with Eon for many years even back to the powergen days she feels that since the meter change her bills have become quite excessive and would like to hear if Eon or any other company can quote for her useage with an aim to reduce her costs,I look forward to any reply and appreciate your contact. Please pm me if you wish.

Thanks for coming back to me.

We don't have access to PM's on here I'm afraid.

However, I'm pleased that your mum has started a conversation with us, it sounds like she's speaking to the right people, so that's good.

I can't quote unfortunately:o I don't have that sort of access.

Economy 10 and other complex meter systems don't show up on comparison sites so you do need to contact each supplier to see if it's something they can support, so I fully understand it's not as easy as having a one rate or economy 7 meter. This does give far more choice not only with us but across the whole market.

When your mum is speaking to us about the meter and having this changed, they can quote and look at the best tariff for here.

Thanks again.

Your mum should not attempt to switch supplier with the existing metering in place. Attempts by others to do so invariably have ended in tears.

As already mentioned by the Eon rep, Eon only offer 1 tariff for your mum's current metering. However, that does not mean it is necessarily poor value, and there is no easy way to compare it to say E7 (although you could compare it to say single rate)

Consult a comparison site to obtain quotes from all the suppliers for E7 (available to your mum once the metering has been changed); ignore the savings (as it will be savings compared to a tariff your mum doesn't currently have) - it's the annual costs you should look at.
