Daughter going to Sydney for a Year what clothing does she need

  • She should arrange a flight with a stop-over somewhere in the Far East and buy lots of clothes there...

Their flight is stopping at Dubai but they only have 4 hours wait. Looks like I will be hitting primark pretty hard this week lol.

She's planning in staying in Sydney, it's been mentioned the idea of traveling but she says she really wants to stay in Sydney (Bondi Rescue and all that!!).

I do hope she is not doing this trip alone.

Sounds really naive and I'd be advising her of other major concerns.

If she only has the standard baggage allowance then there's no way that a typical 23 year old woman is going to carry enough clothes to last a whole year. Most would struggle to last a week on that limit!

I'm sure there's no shortage of cheap clothes shops in Australia.

My daughter lives in Sydney & has done for just over a year. I spoke to her yesterday and she said it's getting warmer in as much as she's wearing jeans/t.shirt during the day but a hoodie in the evenings.

I would get you daughter to take plenty of vest tops & shorts plus usual undies etc and a few shirts, dresses etc (whatever she would normally wear in spring/summer) but with a couple of hoodies and/or sweaters or a light jacket.

In Sydney there is Paddy's markets, which is touristy but she'll be able to get cheap tops etc there and has been pointed out, H&M or I'm told there are outlet places a bit out of the city itself.

My daughter asked us to take face-wipes, dry shampoo and certain brands of foundation she prefers as she found them expensive in Sydney. She also asked for Primark undies, which she will stock up on herself when she's home in 4 weeks.

Is your daughter staying with friends or family? If she's doing the trip by herself and staying in hostels, she will no doubt hook up with other young people who are bound to know where to get cheap clothes from.

    You are entirely correct!
OP - best to let her get on with it. I wonder if there aren't deeper issues here causing the desire to go to Oz for a year.

Thanks for your reply it is really helpful. She is going with her cousin. The first night they arrive they are booked into a hotel near the airport. After that they are booked into a hostel for 20 nights in the hope that they can find work and accommodation. I think they are looking to rent a flat as they are going to be staying in Sydney and not backpacking.

I do wish people would not be so rude when other people looking for advice. You do not know me or my daughter so your remarks are more than insulting.

For your information she is NOT going alone, she is going with her cousin and are meeting up with a couple of friends in Sydney. They are staying in Sydney too and have advised things expensive bring what you can from UK.

Can I ask what other major concerns, she has arranged flights, visa's, various accommodations, in fact everything to do with her planned trip. The one and only thing she is not sure of is what to take. I foolishly thought I could get some advice on this forum. Thankfully I have had plenty of helpful replies allowing her to get along with her packing.

That is the reason I was looking for help on this forum. Have you been to Australia to know how expensive things are?

As I have said to someone else she has friends there who have advised bring as much as you can from UK as things very expensive, not good quality and not the choice you have in the UK.

She is 20 and taking a gap year going to Australia before starting Uni as many thousands no doubt do annually. So please advise me on what deeper issues you feel may be causing this sudden desire (which she has been planning since she started college 2 years ago).

As I am a member of this forum and she isn't, I simply asked for some advice on what she should take why do people need to be so downright rude and critical without knowing the full facts.

I thank the people who have all responded with such helpful advice on what to pack, it is more than appreciated considering the rest of the condescending remarks I have received.
  • If there is anything she can't get there you can post it over to her.
She can also order online from various stores in UK and have stuff delivered in Australia.
