With only a couple of weeks to play with, I wouldn't want to waste any time flying from UK to a European destination and overnighting before starting the journey proper to a SE Asia destination.
Any savings on flights are simply eaten up on overnight accommodation and time lost on the holiday.
Although I don't like the place, Thomson have Dreamliner flights non-stop to Phuket. Apart from Phuket there's plenty of resorts just north of the island strung along the Andaman Coast. Bang La On and Bang Niang are the main townships in Khao Lak.0
