Holiday ideas jan/feb 2017

Looking for some advice from the knowledgeable people out there.

I want to go on a 10 day (max 2 weeks maybe) holiday for some winter sun so I'm looking for some ideas. I don't mind long flights, can spend around 4-5k for 2 people and don't really mind where I go so long as it's dry, warm, has nice beaches and I can chill out.

I can go from Dublin or Belfast.

Any advice or real world examples would be me much appreciated.

Thanks. I was a bit worried Cape Town wouldn't be warm enough.
  • Cape Town will be warm then, but not my favourite place. I much prefer Asia. Or Dubai?

I'm not mad keen on Dubai TBH. I've already travelled around SE Asia but could be tempted to try Thailand again.

We're going to Kuala Lumpar and Penang in February 2017, we've also been to Thailand, The Dom Rep and Jamaica in January in previous years.

The KL/Penang trip with business class flights, 3 days in KL and 7 nights in Penang is coming in so far just a shade under £3k so once we add spending money we're expecting around £4K. Worth a thought?

Cape Town should be lovely at that time of year as it's their summer. It's a long flight but there's barely a time difference, maybe an hour?

Malaysia is definitively worth a shout and that sounds like a good deal. What's your accommodation like?

I did the Perhentian islands a few years ago and really enjoyed it but obviously February wouldn't be the season for it again.

No nice beaches in Penang, but they are nice in Langkawi if you just want to chill out. Or you could do a two centre with somewhere else

Not sure I'll have enough time to do a 2 centre.

To get those biz class flight prices, we are officially starting & finishing our flights on QR in Helsinki, we've got a positioning flight from LHR on BA (CE) using Avios and £100 taxes for 2 of us. We fly to HEL the night before & have used Avios to book an overnight hotel at HEL airport. I had to do quite a bit of searching on skyscanner for 'starting point' flights, we flew out of Stockholm for our Sydney trip in January but Oslo, Frankfurt and Dublin are worth a look, any main European hub (excluding LHR) are worth looking at. After finding the flights on skyscanner, I booked them directly on QR.

The 3 hotels we've booked are 4 star, although I think the Beach resort we've booked in Penang is really a 3 star. Overall, the hotel costs average out about £650 for 10 nights accommodation. We've split the Penang stay with 4 nights at Batu Ferranghi & 3 nights in Georgetown.

I looked at having an overnight in Langkawi (return flights KUL-Penang already booked using Malindo Air) but decided I couldn't face unpacking for a 4th time. Had I researched a little more thoroughly, I may have decided we'd split Penang with Langkawi.
