Compensation payment

I had a flight cancelled and after a long email conversation with the airline they have agreed to make me a payment which I am happy with, but they say they cannot process £GBP and can only pay me in $USD. My flight was paid for in £GBP, with Avianca from London Heathrow to Bogota, Colombia. I never passed through the USA so I dont understand why it has to be in $USD as my bank (Halifax) will probably charge me for the conversion. Do I have the right to claim the money in £GBP? It doesnt seem fair I have to bear the cost of the currency conversion. Thanks

Yes, you are entitled to payment in GBP.
