Paid but no receipt printed

Hi, I would be grateful for any advice,
I parked in the "ParkwithEase" White Moss car park in the Lake District. It is a number plate recognition car park, no windscreen ticket, pay on exit. I paid the full fee before leaving into the parking machine but no receipt was printed. There was a "sorry we cannot print your receipt at this time" error which disappeared before I could photograph it. I have now received a £50 demand for non-payment of parking.
I am therefore in the difficult position of having paid for parking but not being able to prove it. I appealed to "ParkwithEase" but they have said "we have checked our records and the transactions during the period of your visit and there is no payment for your registration or anything similar".
Either there is some software or human error, or they are not telling the truth. If they are not being truthful this would amount to fraud, "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain". But with out seeing their data there is no way for me to prove this.
As I said any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated.
Thanks
JW

So, they are saying that you are a liar. Reply to them suggesting that they take you to court and let a judge decide. But warn them that anything but victory will have financial consequences for them when you sue for defamation. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -
What I am really looking for is to know if this has happened to people before, i.e. they have paid, not been given a receipt, then chased for non-payment. I would also like to know what the result was, or if there is a general principle that no receipt given means no fine can be enforced.
Btw, I am not accusing ParkWithEase of deliberate fraud, it is could a s/w or human error, but it would be useful to know if this is a frequent occurrence.0 -
Never ascribe to incompetence that which can be explained by malice.0

Contact White Moss and see what they say about any errors on the day. Anyone with a car knows they break down. Engineers call it MTBF (mean time between failures).
40 weeks MTBF is usual for these machines so it is likely there was a failure. If there was, people will have contacted White Moss. It is noticeable that a lot of PPC love breakdowns because people are honest and think the PPC will acknowledge the failure but the only way to get these cancelled is to push the ones that hired them to cancel. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. I found the following on Trip Advisor, from 1 star reviews of the Lake District. (I would post the link but am not allowed to being a newbie here.) Each is taken from an individual review of White Moss car park:
"I paid at the machine before leaving - my card was debited with what I believed to be the correct amount ( it was the amount displayed on the screen). I have been hounded with demands of £25 then £50."
"The machines have never once given me a recipet for my payments"
"Their machine did not recognise our reg so we were unable to pay"
"If, as we did, your enter your registration incorrectly it will accept anything and give you a charge. The problem is that it's almost impossible to read what is displayed on the screen so you cannot easily verify what you have entered. "
"We know we paid for parking but they insist we haven't paid."
"when i requested a receipt I was informed that the machine was unable to give one (how convenient). I contacted the operator to request the return of my £1.75 over payment but was told that there is no record of an over payment. "
"We studied the board and decided we had only paid for 1 hour, but should be paying for 2 hours and 1 minute. We tried to re-enter the number plate to add more money but it was then not recognised."
"as the machine was not working and now after 11 month we are being harassed to pay £100 parking fine"
"The first letter I received from them was dated 14 July (coincidentally my birthday) more than four weeks since my trip to the Lakes, by which time I'd cleaned out my car and had no 'evidence' I'd paid"
"Some 23 days later have received a charge notice claiming as we were 29 SECONDS yes seconds over the time £50 is owed"
"I did make the payment and I still have account registered online with car details in my vehicle section. However, they have cleared my payment history on their account. I have my credit card statement and showing 'Nochex' as payment narrative."
"The parking machine was not working and would not accept coins. Several people were trying to pay but the machine did not work. ... I received a letter demanding a parking charge, despite attempting to pay at the machine."
I hope this will be of help to future victims.0 -
