Trying to update Maps on Garmin Nuvi 54, the time is getting longer and longer. It started off at 1 hour something, next time I looked it was 3 hours something, then 5, then 9 and now it's over 10 hours. I started this at about 7 a.m.

Is this normal? I'm sure it didn't take more than an hour or so on previous occasions.

  • No, it's not normal.

Even on my MiFi dongle, I can manage an update in an hour or two.

Have you tried re-installing Garmin Express?

No, I haven't. I'll try to do that now.

I'll report back - thank you.

I've uninstalled Garmin Expressed, reinstalled it and and started the update again, but I think I still have a problem as the time initially stated that the download would take 58 mins and it's now stuck on 6 hours 6 minutes!

last update on mine included an operating system update, it took about 30 mins inc maps, but if download speed drops off estimated time will go sky high. Run speedtest.net and see waht your download speed is.

  • Any chance it's being blocked by a Firewall or AV program?

It says Ping 118ms; Download 12 Mbps; Upload 0.05 Mbps.

Oh golly, I knew someone would ask me a difficult question:o

Not sure how to check - sorry, although this hasn't been a problem previously so I don't think it is.

Actually, I've just realised that my laptop has been very, very slow all morning so perhaps I'll just switch everything off and start from scratch again.

Exactly this ^^ Similar problems updating a Garmin Nuvi, and I discovered the solution was to switch off anti-virus and firewall protection for the duration of the update.

Even my 3G MiFi Dongle is giving an average of 2.44 Mbps upload.

Not that a very low upload speed will affect the Satnav update, which is, of course, a mainly download situation.

A less risky option would've been to add Garmin update to the list of acceptable sites.
