It does astound me though, having a friend who's a coeliac, how much ignorance there is around the subject. I'd be scared to eat out at all, as a result of seeing a similar incident with my friend.

It's much easier now than it ever was, I suspect many of the people I interact with even at meals don't know that I am a coeliac. We are not ill or sickly, we just have to avoid certain foods and make sure we check what we eat.

Why would you check 4 times? And how would the manager or who ever contacted you know they lied? They would have genuinely believed it was gluten free because the chef said so. Is this another compensation wind up thread? seems to be a lot of these about now.

And they fall for it every single time.
You know what uranium is, right? It's this thing called nuclear weapons. And other things. Like lots of things are done with uranium. Including some bad things.

It cost the jamie oliver chain £17000 when they did the same thing, so a couple of free nights at the hotel and a refund of the meal would be getting off lightly

I wonder if this is the reason why a local restaurant near us has a sign up saying something along the lines of "Our products may contain nuts, we do not do gluten free, we do not do wheat free ... etc. etc.

I would have thought a hal-decent chef should be able to get simple dietary requirements right though (or at least apologise and say that they do not have something suitable).

The ingredients are fine but some coeliacs are unhappy if there is any chance of cross contamination at all- so require separate kitchen areas and storage. Gluten is actually not airborne and needs to be eaten to affect us, but many coeliacs believe it can travel through air in and out of sealed fridges- and any issues they get after eating out is blamed on contamination.

Obviously getting served the wrong pizza is pretty appalling and a serious issue and the OP does need to take this further. However I can see why some restaurants cover themselves with statements such as 'we do not cater for coeliacs'. If I opened any sort of restaurant there is no way on earth I would offer gluten free meals in this claim culture.

Firstly you should be grateful that they actually took your case seriously, investigated and then bothered to contact you back to admit to their error. Surely, ultimately, this is the most important outcome and surely, what you care most about is to know what procedures they have now put into place so that it doesn't happen again?

If however your main aim is to get as much money out of them as possible, then the world is your oyster, although considering your sickness wasn't bad enough to warrant a GP let alone a hospital visit, I wouldn't count on £1,000s.
