If you can wait until October you could go along to Discover Dogs

    http://www.discoverdogs.org.uk/

where you can meet dogs of all description and talk to breeders to get information on whether their breed would be suitable for you.

There will also be rescues there for information.

£500 for a crossbred puppy... seriously??

Dog ownership isn't about falling in love with a puppy and buying it loads of stuff. Please, please, do an awful lot of research before going any further. Go to shows, look and learn, speak to breeders who DON'T have pups for sale (most good breeders have a waiting list for puppies from an intelligently planned mating). TALK to people who know their breed, learn as much as you can, if you're determined to get some sort of designer-crossbreed then be sure what you really want - and why you think it's a good idea - and do your bit to stop the hideous unscrupulous money-grabbers who advertise puppies on Gumtree and similar sites by giving them a very wide berth instead of giving them your cash.

Or go to a reputable shelter, who are serious about matching dogs to the right home, but still take some time talking to them, listening and learning.

A dog is for life - be happy with yours when you find each other!

However you call it, whatever fancy name you want to use - it is STILL a cross bread and anyone paying silly money for it is silly.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with cross breeds as such but people "creating" random mixes without proper health checks of the parents (and those are NOT just a vet looking them over and saying "fine") are there just for the money and looking for mugs willing to pay for some ShitPoo or other..

Dachshunds do have a lot of back problems. Outcrossing is probably a very sensible thing for the breed club/professional breeders to consider to reduce the extreme features they have bred in over the years.

However, chucking a random dachshund and a random chihuahua together is not the way to do it!

If this breeder can talk about the health and genetics of both dogs, and why she's bred them together and what her plans are going forward to improve the health of the breed long term, then you may have found one of the good ones. As she's selling the puppies though I have my doubts, as how can she continue her breeding programme if the puppies are gone to pet homes?

Sadly a friend of mine lost her dachshund when the women paid to dog sit him whilst they were on holiday allowed the cat to get in and he ran downstairs bending up his back causing him to fall and break his back, the mix of the two sounds really odd.

To the OP I am sat looking at our new little baby pup :j. We did alot of research of what breed we wanted and contacted a few sellers before buying. The breeder we got her from was happy for us to contact him numerous times and to make repeated visits to see her. He gave us the vets details so we could speak to them about the parents health-they are family pets are were there and very friendly and happy.

He gave us loads of advice on care, and feeding,a blanket that the whole family had slept on the night before, documents about the parents and the documents relating to the chip and first vaccination. He was a lovely guy who said ring any time for advice and even had a little tear in his eye when we finally collected her. He even said to the girls to take good care of his baby doggy.

Trust you instincts I think, if you can see the pups and parents at home and the seller is open and communicative and is happy for you to check with their vets and provide documents etc, plus look at the dogs are they happy come forward and see healthy and well adjusted then hopefully it will be fine. Good luck
