  • Hi all, thank you again for your reply.
The original pup was £500, so they asked for 10% as a deposit.
Initially my heart was set on a miniature dachshund, but i was told many horror stories (from friends of friends) of how delicate their backs were and how prone they are to disc problems so thought a cross breed might help. Obviously everyone is entitled to their own opinions.
The 2nd seller which I spoke to just now have asked me lots of questions about my home, if i have children (no), how demanding our jobs are, have we got all the necessities, will we be bringing in a puppy sitter (yes, 1 hour mid morning, 1 hour early afternoon), have we considered vet fee's etc, and even recommended insurance (petplan or john lewis lifetime). She will also email across the dads PRA clear cert, and KC docs if I am interested, along with lots more pictures of mum and the puppy.
I am going to have a good long think about things before going to see this puppy. I will also contact the local RSPCA and dog shelters to see if I can bring in a rescue instead.

Dachshunds do have a lot of back problems. Outcrossing is probably a very sensible thing for the breed club/professional breeders to consider to reduce the extreme features they have bred in over the years.

However, chucking a random dachshund and a random chihuahua together is not the way to do it!

If this breeder can talk about the health and genetics of both dogs, and why she's bred them together and what her plans are going forward to improve the health of the breed long term, then you may have found one of the good ones. As she's selling the puppies though I have my doubts, as how can she continue her breeding programme if the puppies are gone to pet homes?

There are so many sad stories of puppies bought via Preloved and Gumtree; home of the puppy farmer and back yard breeder.

I do hope the mum was the daxie and not the chihuahua as the latter have birthing problems (due to head size) even when not crossed with a larger breed.

There are stories of money grabbing show breeders, but if you go along to a few shows (many are free to visit) you can get to really know the breed, meet owner/breeders and probably get a good breeder recommended, who has pet only puppies for sale.

Just for info - we have a dachshund / corgi cross (Dorgi) and he's had back problems
Th vet did say he was unlucky but just because you have a dachshund cross doesn't mean there will be no problems.
We would be very wary of getting a long backed dog again as it's heartbreaking to watch them when they're "down"
Diego is fine now & a happy bouncy 11 yr old:D

PS - no silly money paid for him

Send them a message from another account, separate email address etc. asking if puppies are still available as you're interested and could pay cash - or something similar.

You'll get a good idea by the reply on what they're really like. Did you get a receipt for the deposit or have any communications from them still on your emails/phone?
  • Thanks

I've tried that already, 2 of my friends posed as potential new buyers but the phone has been off. No response from the messages sent via the website either.
We paid the £50 deposit in cash, I've only got a text that I sent to them a few hours after leaving confirming the £50 and pick up date., the reply was 'yeh sure'. Haven't heard anything ever since despite 3 texts and a few voicemails.

£500? ..Five hundred quid?!

They saw you coming, Yorkshire Tea - your 'deposit' has gone; the only positive I can see - which perhaps makes the cash not a complete loss - is that this experience has led you here!

Please, do go and visit your local animal shelter - call it research if you like; talk to the staff, cuddle some pups - no need to make a decision until later when you've had a chance to consider what you found, and have spoken to your partner of course..

I have had 2 rescue dogs ,one a puppy and the other a two year old. They have been the most wonderful, loving faithful dogs you could wish for and I would never consider going to a breeder.I'm sure a lot other posters will say the same. Please reconsider,if everyone took in rescued dog, breeding would die down considerably, saving a lot of suffering.I appreciate that some are ok,but while there are dogs being killed for no other reason than there is no one to give them a home,it is just not right.

No, the poor fool that buys the puppy can still change the details.

They can't - the person who is currently named on the register has to give permission for the change (so you can't steal someone's pet and update the chip to have your details on it).

However, if OP had been put on the chip register then the chip company would contact her and she'd give permission. :)

OP - delighted to see you're considering a rescue. Do go take a look. They have a whole range of dogs (breeds and ages). There's sometimes a wait for a puppy (everyone wants one!) but it's still so worth it. And of course older dogs are also in desperate need of a loving home.

There'll be a rescue dog for you whether you're a first time dog owner or an old hand. Some rescue dogs will need an experienced owner because they've had a rough life. Others will be young pups or have had good owners who simply couldn't keep them anymore (or have passed away) and first timers will do just fine with them. :) The rescue will be well used to finding out what you're looking for and what experience you have and will tell you if a dog is a good match for you.

There's normally a fee at a rescue (often quoted as a minimum suggested donation) but your pup/dog will normally have been neutered/spayed and be up-to-date with jabs, plus it'll still be a LOT less than £500!

Friends, family, colleagues etc in the area may be able to recommend rescues. In our area, some of the nicest ones are the smaller, independent ones, but you'd want recommendations in case they're iffy.
