There are loads of threads in 'Gas & Elec' on this subject.

This link will take you to some of them:

British Gas with their 3* breakdown service are the main providers. This includes a service and the rest of your heating system. Others are slightly cheaper but apparently not as comprehensive - especially on call out response.

Mixed opinions on whether it is value for money as you will read.

I know its a gamble, but I dont believe in extended guarantees as they usually are run by FAT CAT insurance companies, not the manufacturers, and have a lot of small print.
IMHO you would be better off banking the fees in a high interest rate account, as a method of saving for your next boiler. In the meantime search out a reasonable cheap gas fitter, as recommended by word of mouth. You have chosen a top rate (BMW) of boilers, so you may never need him, but you will have the funds to pay him.

I've just had a new baxi installed and as well as the installer covering me for the 12 months warranty i also have registered with heateamthe service division of baxi potterton. For an additional year it will cost £99 or £9.90 over 10 months. I don't know ifI will use this yetas it doesn't say anything about a yearlyservice which should be done....Anyway I think it might be worth your while speaking to the manufacturers service Division...British Gas are more expensive.Good luck!
  • I fit/service worcester boilers daily. They are seen as being pretty much the market leaders of the heating industry and we are also an agent for worcester in my area. The worcester boilers we install come with a 2 year standard guarentee and as we are agents for worcester we can offer a 3rd yr free of charge with no catches.
If the boiler i had from them was installed and commissioned correctly(check benchmark log) i would expect to get at least 3-5 yrs(maybe longer) trouble free motoring provided it is checked anually. Check out the site below for a recommendation of worcester agents in your area and keep the money you would spend on contract to oneside. I bet you find you are better off doing it that way. Personally i think these contracts are a con and they are praying on you being terrified of gas and water leaks. If your boiler was 10yrs old then the contract maybe beneficial to you.

I think most of us would agree with you that newer boilers are relatively trouble free.

However the 3* cover with, say, BG provides cover for the whole heating system and they carry out a service.(you state they need an annual check anyway)

In my experience over many years with this sort of cover(and 2 systems – one a Worcester) it has been the other parts of the system that have caused the problem.

Again I agree with you that "keeping the money to one side" might be the better option. However I and many others treat these schemes as insurance and obviously on balance ‘Mr Average’ will pay out more in premiums that the cost of repairs - like any other insurance.

Another factor is the difficulty in finding a plumber who will not ‘rip you off’ particularly in an emergency. Around here you are talking of £hundreds to call them out on a weekend or a holiday.
