You need only the Now TV box. It will do all that you need. You can even sideload Plex to the box, but that is another thing altogether. You can investigate if it will be of use to you later.0 -

Yes, IF you add a Google Chromecast to your TV in a spare HDMI socket. I'm assuming you have HDMI inputs on your TV .... ? If not, the Chromecast won't work, and I don't think the NowTV box will eitherLooks like the Nowtv box is going to do what I need
From a convenience point of view, you'll have to have the NowTV box in view of the remote control, and it will add another remote control to however many you already have. The box will need a mains supply.
The Chromecast, IF you have HDMI and USB ports on your TV, will take its power from there, and will be invisible, as long as you use an HDMI port on the back. No need for a box in view, no need for line of sight, all controlled from the iPad. All wireless.0 -

Of course the Now TV box being independent can be seen as a positive. Not having to tie the iPad up in order to view YouTube.. But your points are fair.0 -

Once something has been cast to the CC, the iPad is out of the loop until you stop, pause, or do something else in the app. The user is free to do other things with the Pad, whether that's editing a spreadsheet, browsing MSE or whatever. But 99.999999% of folks, I would imagine, would put the pad down and watch what they've just requested to play on the TV. No?NiftyDigits wrote: »But your points are fair.

I have no idea. Someone else may be utilising the iPad at the time. Only the OP knows what best suits their needs.
But at least you put forward a good argument, in so the OP can collate the info and decide what's best.0 -
As you can buy a dual core Windows vista/7 laptop for like £50 and get pretty much every channel and Youtube.
On the other hand if you're looking for something a bit more discreet you can get an Amazon Fire stick.
Something with a bit more punch would be a Minix Neo Box.0 -
