But no fees at all to use the built in apps - like YouTube etc

Agreed - The NowTV boxes I have used have had terribly slow and clunky interfaces.
Like 2 second delay when skipping through the channel list.

Cant comment on newer ones though, this may have been fixed.
    Firesticks are great

I meant for the OP's intended usage. Viewing YouTube. I don't think they'll gain any benefit by paying £20 more.
In addition, unless you've actually tried the black box and are not referring to the older white box, your comment is not valid.

    Don't have a lap-top,although I do have an iPad

    That comes with YouTube pre-installed.

Chromecast will work with it, as well as with Netflix, NowTV and similar apps which you can download to it.

Had a look at the Nowtv box, looks ideal, however, can I buy it and then just plug it in and watch YouTube and it doesn't cost me anything else, there is no subscription?

You don't need a NowTV box if you have an iPad. Download the NowTV app and view it through the Google Chromecast

You'll need to go into the settings on the Now TV box and enter the wireless key for your router, but that only takes a minute.
I've got one and it's great for watching YouTube
    I don't pay any subscription.

Where has the OP mentioned that they own a ChromeCast??

    Did you mean Google Cast?

If they owned a ChromeCast, they wouldn't need to use their iPad. But the Now TV Box is almost half the price of a ChromeCast, so better the Now TV box.

Google Chromecast (as long as you have a tablet or wireless PC to 'cast' to the CC)
