I agree its all a myth, but i did fill one of my previous Diesel Mondeo's at Tesco and it made a knocking noise within a few hundred yards.

It may have been that the fuel station had just been replenished which stirs up the sediment of the underground tanks.
I had a Mondeo tdci and it was still running fine at 320k and I only sold it as I was offered a great price for a Passat.
Ran the Mondeo on, mostly, Asda diesel, since I bought the mondeo on 90k.0 -
Have the brand snobs and supermarket fuel myth believers forgotten about when Shell launched a new 'super formula' fuel back in the eighties that actually caused serious damage to many engines!0

So many anecdotes about cars "feeling" different when it is a well known fact that confirmation bias and placebo hugely distort our subjective views. Where are the data?0
-
Sometimes, a "feeling" counts more than data. I know for a fact that my old BMW diesel ran pretty rough on Morrisons fuel and would enter a DPF regen more frequently.
That basically means that you are happy to pay extra for the placebo of thinking that the car is running better.
I run my car on bulk diesel, it doesn't have any kind of brand name or additives and meets the minimum requirements of all Diesel sold in the country. I have data showing that over 3 years of ownership it consistantly gives more than the combined MPG. I also had it on a Dyno a few weeks ago and it was exactly the horsepower it is supposed to be, even though it has done over 190,000 miles. So this shows that basic Diesel is perfectly fine for my engine.
So unless there is data showing that branded diesel is better for an engine why would you pay more for it?.0 -
