Quick question from Newbie!

Hello,

Many thanks for reading my question. I am being charged quite highly by my Santander 123 Current Account, when I use their authorised overdraft and when I slip into the unauthorised overdraft too, this month alon I have been charged £23 for using their authorised overdraft and £18 for using their unauthorised overdraft, is there anyway I can reclaim this back, as I am a single mum and each month it does hit me quite hard financially?

Many thanks
Xx

If you are in current financial hardship then yes you can ask the bank for assistance, it may take the form of refunds of the last 6 months charges, freezes on future charges etc

Do note they will check for luxury spending such as shopping at Waitrose, eating out, clothes from House of Fraser, expensive mobile contracts, Sky bills etc as these would normally be cancelled by someone struggling to make ends meet

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

If you are in current financial hardship, the bank has to treat you fairly and has a range of options available to achieve this. If you are caught in a cycle of charges in which going overdrawn this month causes charges which in turn cause you to go overdrawn again the bank may suspend future interest charges for a time or offer account management. The bank may also refund (some) recent charges. You'll have to write and put your case to them.

However, since it sounds more like you need assistance budgeting each month, I suggest you post your Statement Of Affairs (SOA) on the "Debt Free Wannabe" section of this forum. There are posters there who can help you ensure that you don't slip into this debt trap in the future:
