In the current climate you will be able to haggle for a discount more easily iimagine, so might not need to spend that amount to find something your girlfriend loves. The jewellry quarter is great, and also has many second hand shops which might produce an antique ring she like if she's into that kind of thing (i am!)

It's your money so you spend it however you like. This site is about getting a good deal on your purchases, not scrimping on everything you can.

New account created for this as my girlfriend reads the forums....

I'm planning on asking my girlfriend to marry me and I know she's always dreamt of a diamond ring.

    ....

Her ring size might make off the shelf hard and will likely need adjusted as its a G

Her ring size is a G? Damn, you're not my boyfriend.

    Best wishes though :)

I know this site is all about money saving, getting rid of debts, and all of that, but, if you can afford the £3k or whatever, I would DEFINITELY say GO FOR IT! It's true that you can spend some of that money on a holiday, but you will get chance to go on a lot of holidays, but that ring will be on her finger every day for the rest of her life hopefully and will be a big part of her life.

My husband proposed with an amazing, gorgeous diamond engagement ring and every time I look at it, I feel very proud and happy - not just of the ring  but, for me, it's symbolic representation of *our* relationship - <goes all slushy>... :smileyhea :p

Anyway, my husband got our ring from Beaverbrooks. He's not a natural MSE at all, so didn't get a deal (to my knowledge - I would be v shocked if he had).

For the wedding ring, I searched all over and ended buying one online.

I can recommend www.diamondgeezer.com. This company was actually on Dragons Den! We bought a diamond half eternity from them - high quality diamonds were a must and I liked the way I could easily specify the (non conflict) diamonds that I wanted - and the service was very, very good. Also got an independant valuation certificate too, which showed market/insurance value of ring.

Do it on a cashback credit card (protection and cashback!) for extra benefit. Hmmm... can't think of anything else.

Good luck wherever you decide to buy from - :T

haha bum i was just thinking that. they probably have their first kid by now. (was going to say they are probably divorced by now, but that's WAY too pessimistic thinking for someone (ie me) getting married this year!!)
  • I'd say £3,000 was way to much to spend on an engaement ring.
My OH had been saving for months and found the perfect ring in the sale of a jewlers in oxford street. It's worth £1,600 but he got it for £775. If he had spent £1,600 on it i would have killed him. We need the money for other things such as the wedding.
Its not the price of the ring that matters at all, its that you are engaged and want to spend the rest of your lives together.
Luckily for me OH has fantatstic taste and i absolutly love the ring :D
    I'll admit that I am a massive spreadsheet geek:rotfl:
OH proposed on the 1st December
New car, new house and a wedding to plan!!!:D

£3k is a lot of money, but if you can afford it, go for it.
I wear £3k engagement ring, mine is from my husband's family inheritance, but if he could afford it and didn't have inherited one I am hoping he would have spend that much on me...

Also, diamonds are forever and would you or your sons or grand sons or great grand sons... run into difficulty, you or them can always sell it...

That is how I look at it.
  • My then Partner and I looked at rings together and the ones I picked out were about £300 I tried on loads because orginally I wanted a single diamond but when I tried on a trilogy ring I loved it.
I left it to him to pick the ring as I knew he would get the design I wanted and there was no pressure on him to spend more money than he wanted too either.
The ring he picked was from a local independant shop who made my ring as I have slim fingers and also gave us a huge discount on our wedding bands and threw in a bottle of champagne!
I know the ring cost over £3k and when I found out (by accident) I was really annoyed about him spending so much. Although I didn't care how much it cost or that the diamonds are perfect - HE did and he wanted me to have the best he could possibly buy for me as his future wife. He isn't a romantic guy by any means and when he told me this I was really emotional.
So yes it is a lot of money but diamonds are forever!
