There are a lot of places in Dorset and Hampshire that don't have mains gas.

A lot of newer (70s and 80s) estates in Verwood all have storage heating as no mains gas was provisioned for when built.

I have yet to see that many lower end houses without any heating provision at all in these areas though. Where are you looking???
  • When I left home in 1976 my parents had only just had a bathroom put upstairs. The toilet was outside and the bath off the kitchen in a small room with the Hot water boiler this room was always warm as the boiler was massive. Mother hated the toilet being indoors as she felt it was unclean and would have preferred it left outside.

Funny thing is that I cant remember it being cold in winter going outside as it was all we had known.

No central heating but there was a gas fire in the front room and this was classed as a luxury as We were only one of a few who could afford to do this.

    Happy days :rotfl:

I just now accept that we will have to fork out thousands when we move in and have all the floors pulled up. But everyone I talk to seem shocked by it. So now I'm not sure if I'm being silly buying one.
To go back to your original question, and before this turns into "Four Yorkshiremen," it isn't silly at all to be considering ex-council houses from the middle of the 20th century. These houses were often better built than their privately-constructed counterparts and their dimensions were frequently more generous too.

The question is whether, if you have the hassle of 'pulling all the floorboards up' etc,the house will suit you well for a number of years to come and better than others on offer. Moving house is almost always more expensive than people think.

There's also a personality element, because not everyone relishes DIY and/or direct engagement with those from the building trades. Some couples love personalising a place and improving their skills on it, while others would rather buy a new build and go on loads of holidays.

Even when quite old, like me, some people will conclude that the only way to afford what they really want is to take on a project property. It can still work out, but it's not for the faint-hearted and profit shouldn't be the motive.
