On Satellite - Freetime from Freesat.
On DTT (Freeview) - YouView.
Both are HD PVRs that are also smart, that come with internet connected services (such as Netflix), plus a vast range of catch up TV to access.
Either box is a no-brainer.0 -
I can recommend a BT you view box. We got one off ebay last year works great. All the catchup TV and you can go bsck though the EPG for 7 days to watch that program you missed.Jane x0

Humax brand comes highly recommended. We have two, which are several years old and still working, while two other brands lasted for under two years each.0

Recently got a Youview + box (from PlusNet) and it's really really good. Record 2 channels at the same time whilst watching something else. The apps are all the usual - bbc, itv, C4, C5, Now TV, Netflix etc. The guide is easy to use and set up recording. It comes with about 500gb space which is more than enough for me.
Previously I was using an external hard drive connected to my TV, but it couldn't record HD channels very well. I got it free from PlusNet when I upgraded to Unlimited Fibre, so technically not free but only cost me £2 extra a month, but worth it for the extra speed. They charge for the basic TV package at £5 a month, but I got that free for 18 months as well. The basic package includes BT sport 1 and Eurosport, and you can pay extra to get the extra sports channels from BT. I recommend. Far as I know, you can just buy a Youview box on it's own anyway so no extra cost using it on it's own.0 -
At this point I think its fair to note there have been two recommendations so far. YouView and Humax. And Humax make YouView boxes the for both retail and ISP supplied sectors.
Humax make their own standalone boxes, of course, but its YouView that is by far and away the number 1 selling PVR of choice on Freeview. Saying the platforms only 4 years old thats quite an achievement.0 -

The box doesn't have WiFi, so if you want the internet stuff, you do need to plug it into a router. It will perform perfectly well as a Freeview recorder, as in you can watch and record programmes. You'll miss out on iPlayer etc.
OR you could buy a pair of homeplugs. You get two, plug them into the mains. Your mains wiring becomes a network! Plug one homeplug via ethernet to the router, and the other via ethernet to the YouView box. This will get you iPlayer etc... £25 ish.0
