Found a big chunk of cash in a cashpoint...

I called the bank just now to ask what to do and she said to return to the branch with the money when it reopens, but said "they may not be able to match it with the person, as they may not have the cashpoint records available". That seems bizarre.
Not only bizarre but almost certainly untrue if you were able to tell them the exact time that you took the money out of the ATM, it was the last person before that time who requested the money and they certainly will have that person's information. Sounds to me like you got someone who knows noting about it, which is a shame but not that unusual unfortunately.0 -
Report to police so they've got it on record. Then take the money to the branch like the bank said. Not your problem.
Except it is my problem, you cheeky sod.
If the person who a missing item belongs to cannot be found, then under law the person who found it has the biggest claim on it.
I'll do all I can to find the person, but if they can't be found then the money - legally - ends up in my pocket, not some bank branch's Xmas party kitty.0 -

And please refrain from calling other posters names, particularly those just passing on advice.0 -

In fairness you won't do everything you can to find the person as you won't hand it into the bank (the only people who can trace the owner) without some weird assurance that the person you hand it to won't nick it. You'll never get that.
Either hand it in or keep it. If you take it to the police they'll just say hand it into the bank.0 -
It's not some weird assurance. The bank said they're unlikely to be able to trace who was using the ATM (and Google searches suggest that unless it was one of their customers using that bank's card then they can't).
So all I'm going to do is flag it with the bank, give them my details, and ask them to get in touch if anyone alerts them to losing X amount from a cashpoint. In the meantime it's going to be registered on the police lost property database. Two things that were suggested by people in real life since I posted.
I think some of your cynical responses do suggest that you wouldn't act accordingly in similar circumstances. That's for your consciences.0 -

Just to clarify you're going to phone up a bank, give your details and then say you've taken some money that isn't yours and you won't return it to the bank?
Sounds sensible....
Also the lost property database says you should hand cash in to the police. I would be very surprised if once you've told them your story they don't just say "give it back to the bank"0 -
So you don't want to hand it in in case it stops you being next in line for it if no-one claims?
That's what I'm hearing.
Despite all the bad press, I still reckon most people would trust a Bank and its staff to do the 'right thing' at this level and so would the police.
If its a missable amount the chance of someone NOT claiming is quite remote. It might take a while to work through if it wasn't a customer of that bank as they'll probably have to go through their own Bank as well.
If by any chance the police advise you to keep it then fair enough but I very much doubt that.0 -

So literally the exact same thing I said. Yet somehow I'm a 'cheeky sod' but in real life it's sound advice! Charming.
If you're only bothered about being next in line to keep the money you've probably no intention of giving it back anyway and probably are just checking you can't be traced.
But much better in your pocket than the unsavory types you referenced, right. With an attitude like yours I'm certain you're only going to do good things with it. :doh:0 -
It's a load of rubbish that Bank's don't have a record of ATM transactions. Of course they do it's all computerised and if they didn't how would your account get debited!
There is a standardised reclaim system in place between the Banks for customers who fail to get their cash from an ATM. However if this poor person puts a claim in they will be unsuccessful as there would be no discrepancy in the cash held in the ATM because you have their money and not the Bank.0 -

The OP would have been better to "guard" the machine until it took the money back itself.0
