The slippery slope to driveway hell

It seems our street is going down the slippery slope whereby one neighbour gets a driveway put in, this reduces the on street parking and so another neighbour gets fed up and puts in a driveway.

Unfortunately I'm on the wrong side of the road and have a huge steep garden and would require large excavations to put in a driveway and I don't really want a driveway anyway.

However my neighbour has 5 cars and I have 1. I can see in the future I will be forced to put in an ugly driveway

Wish the council could limit the number of cars owned per household.

Be careful what you wish for - you may very well end up with resident permits, with a maximum number per household, which is the only practicable way to do that. Then you'll be asking why you have to pay to park outside your own house, and why the price keeps going up.
  • I get what you mean. Same in the road I live on. This is compounded by the stupid council stipulating that a new estate nearby was built with not enough parking to 'encourage people to use public transport'. Guess what, it has just pushed parking out of the estate onto the surrounding roads. I gave up and 6k poorer can now park.

We also rejected permit parking, because as AdrianC says, it can also be problematic.

Suggest, if I may, that you just organise off street parking, it ain't going to get any better

And what to do about the parking tickets that friends keep getting in the two minutes it takes them to go get your permit from your house.

Where I used to live we celebrated finally getting residents permits. The celebrations didn't last long, especially when the local GPs kept getting ticketed when doing home visits.
Unless I say otherwise 'you' means the general you not you specifically.

Not just the GPs but also the plumbers, electricians, window cleaners, washing machine repairers and pretty much any tradesman that might ever visit your house.

Could you put in a more modest drive - lay tracks (block paved, or slabs) rather than having the whole area covered or paved?

Those of us in the 'know' tend to carry two number plate covers to place over our number plates when parking in residents permit areas when working on a prson's house/

Front garden is very steep, will require the removal of about as much soil as would be contained in a garage! Could just have rocky dirt as the surface and it would still be very expensive!

    How does it reduce parking?

Considerate neighbours maybe, who don't park right opposite your drive, and 1cm each side of the dropped kerbs so you need a 5 point turn to get out of your drive?

Otherwise, a drive isn't as wide as a car is long as you are implying :D

I would question why you bought a house with no parking.
