Unexpected credit card charge after car hire

Hi everyone
Hoping someone can help.
I hired a car in France a couple of weeks ago, and have gone to pay my credit card bill and noticed an unexpected charge of nearly €40 from Hertz.
I returned the car full of fuel as requested, and I have photographs of the fuel gauge at the airport. And as the car was a bit grubby I gave it a quick wash before returning. I have no idea why they charged me this amount, I did not get a receipt from the woman at the counter and nobody checked the car when I returned it. This is the policy at the airport where I collected the car.
Has anyone got any idea what this charge might be for? Or how I can get it refunded?
I have hired cars across the world, though this is my first time using Hertz, and I've never had this happen. My credit card bill is due to be paid on Monday, but I really don't want to pay this charge until I have a least found out what it supposed to be for.
I would appreciate any advice about reclaiming this charge, I have already emailed Hertz but I've not heard anything back. Thank you.

Ask your CC provider to reverse the charge. If and when Hertz provide you with an invoice, they can then reapply the charge if it is valid.

There's no point us guessing what it's for, it could be so many things, you'll have to wait for Hertz to tell you.

    You could call Hertz.

    £40?

Pay the credit card bill when due whether it's resolved or not.

    As above, ask Hertz.

...on their UK number, they can pull up your rental details.

Don't delay paying off your card, any charge reversal will not be affected.
    Evolution, not revolution

Definitely don't delay paying your CC bill - I don't think Hertz would refund you any bank charges if it turns out they were wrong about the €40
