Tracing where a payment came from over two years ago

Any ideas?! I put a deposit in my bank account two and a hall years ago, I'm sure it was from a PPI claim, but unfortunately I can't find any record of where it's from and need to prove to the tax dept that it wasn't from work (I'm self employed). I've contacted banks to see if they can provide evidence of payment but their records only go back two years. Is there maybe some sort of database fo PPI payments made? Grasping at straws I know, but any ideas?

On a positive note, even if it was a PPI payment the interest element would still be classed as taxable income!
You might get more informed responses over on the "Budgeting and Bank Accounts" forum

A lot of refunds are not classed as taxable. Tax is however paid on the interest.

Has a brief overview re the various forms of PPI compensation, as well as a link to a more detailed guide by HMRC.
In short, not everything you receive during a tax year is 'income' for the purposes of your Self-Assessment return to HMRC. Winnings on the horses aren't either.
garyplumber - which bank? Email HQ a complaint if need be, as not heard of that before (only 2 years' worth of records). Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -

It isn't. Betting tax was abolished 15 years ago.
Apologies for the typo.
Yes, banks should be able to view this on their systems for upto 6 years (RBS can). Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -
