How does that square with the GOV.UK site saying you must register a death within 5 days?

That seems strange, I've had to register several all round the country now (for parents, parents in law and an aunt) and have never had an issue. It's always been same or next day. I'm not sure how they manage with waiting days when you need the certificate before you can do anything really to the remains, it would also be in breach of the religious practice of many common religions within the UK.

The only thing that took any time was the probate, in that instance I did have to wait a few weeks for an appointment at my chosen office.

this wouldn't have been covered by insurance anyway (because it was a pre existing condition)

I think it would be covered, because none of those travelling, has a pre-existing condition.

When taking out insurance, I've never been asked "Does anyone you are related to, have a pre-existing medical condition?"

Although you're not asked, policy wording generally covers it. Mine says

" You must declare all medical conditions:
It is important you tell us about any medical conditions affecting the health of the people travelling, or a relative or colleague upon whose state of health a decision by you to cancel or cut short a trip may depend".
  • I'm supposed to tell them, if a workmate has a medical condition?

Yes, if the state of his health would make you cancel or cut short your trip eg if he was very ill or died would it make you cancel or holiday, or want to come home early?
