Bank error cash withdrawal

Hi All,
I visited a branch recently and requested a large cash withdrawal. Upon checking the amount when I got home they have given me £5000 more. Do I need to give this back? where do I stand, any legal experts out there?
Thanks

If you deposited £10,000 into your account but the bank only credited your account with £5,000.
Would you want the other £5,000 to be credited as well?0 -
The bank can reverse the transaction if they know, the tills wouldn't have balanced but they will have to contact you or write to you, before this happens but if they know its your account that the error relates to then they are in their rights to correct your account, including if this takes you into a unauthorised overdraft.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Banking & Borrowing, and Reduce Debt & Boost Income boards. Thanks for your replies. I thought my luck was in for once in my life!
They have contacted me but the woman was so shirty with me as if its my fault. It was their error after all, I thought it would have been nice to get one over one of the big banks.0 -
How an earth did that happen ?? They painfully count the money out in front of you ! They dont just hand it over in a bundle
So you either watched them count double, never paid attention ( erm unlikely ) or just woke up from your dream lolStuck on the carousel in Disneyland's Fantasyland

Agreed that it was the banks fault, they should have checked tye amount given to you.
But the woman shouldn't have spoken to you the way she did - it was not professional of her.
But it's better sorted now rather than later where there could have been the possibility of the bank charging you with fraud, or with you spending the money and the bank finding out months down the line and debiting your account by 5K and leaving you overdrawn.
It's good that it got sorted out quickly, this is the best result for you as it would have been impossible for you to keep hold of the extra 5K. The bank would have found out sooner or later0 -
I find it a highly unlikely story, and it is now school holidays after all...0

When I have had counter dealings of money in the £1000s range, two tellers have counted the money, making this kind of error extremely unlikely.0

Schools is out, as Agrinall said.............make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
£5,000 too much? Even with £50 notes, that would be 100 notes too many! Just how much were you withdrawing if you didn't notice the extra 100+ notes at the time it was given to you??"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Seems highly unlikely story.
In my local branch of Barclays the cashier first counts the money themselves, then puts the notes on to what appears to be a set of scales and then counts it again as they hand it over.
I of course don't know if this is standard practice for all banks but in the case of Barclays they seem to do it even for relatively small amounts. Following this procedure I think it would be impossible to get £5K too much.0
