Doesn't surprise me. Completely over the top, counter productive and a waste of money.

I'm sure you will continue to think it 'over the top, counterproductive and a waste of money' until the day that a child or vulnerable adult is harmed by a cleaner, porter or catering assistant who is known to the police. Then you will be on the internet ranting that the NHS is a disgrace, and failed in their duty of care. Jimmy Saville, remember him?

Absolute garbage. That could happen anywhere, perpetrated by anyone.

OP, I've hijacked your thread. Sorry. I'll leave off now.

I will contact them as soon as the certificate arrives and will take it from there. I just thought that as they were notified no information on my dbs check and the fact my job tracker states no further action that they would just issue me with an induction date next.

I don't yet have my NHS badge I'm sure I will get that at my induction.

That just leaves counter productive and over the top then, if you think it's okay for, say, a hospital cleaner to be shafted with having to pay a fee for this needless, intrusive checking.

The minimum NHS wage is over £15,000 - paying £26 from that is hardly over the top.

And yes a cleaner should definitely be checked.

It's not intrusive, if you don't want to provide the DBS certificate you don't have to. You just cant work for the NHS.

    It's not forced upon anyone.

You are PAYING for the DBS? I always thought that the NHS paid for them. My Trust certainly paid for mine.

They won't start you until they have seen the actual certificate themselves. When HR are satisfied, you'll receive a call from your line manager to arrange a start date.

I think there is the option to charge the employee but often they don't actually bother.

But every job description I've read on NHS Jobs has the disclaimer at the bottom.

I am astounded that any NHS staff have to pay for their own DBS check. I've never heard of that happening - mine have always been done by the employer.

GingerBob - any staff working in a hospital should be checked. They are around vulnerable people.

The point is that the NHS deals predominantly with people who at best are unwell and in many cases completely at the mercy of those around them....

I'm sorry this very basic concept is too much for you to comprehend.

Just went onto NHS Jobs, random job:

If the post is subject to Disclosure & Barring Service checking, (formerly CRB) a charge of £44 for Enhanced and £26 for Standard clearance for will be made to the successful candidate(s).

Sorry OP, can't let that one go. Just what sort of concept is it then? That anyone around vulnerable people at any time should be police checked? I'm around so-called vulnerable people from time to time. Maybe I visit someone in hospital, maybe I walk down the street, sit on a bus, collect the kids from school - there are millions of times when people are around vulnerable others, so the concept you talk about is stupid in the extreme. It's like the case of the church flower arranger who had to be checked; absolute bloody nonsense! An outrage in fact. Total paranoia, while the actual abusers carry on regardless.

You aren't EMPLOYED to do this though, so your EMPLOYER (a financially stretched NHS) wont be liable if you act inappropriately!
