hi everybody, thanks for your replies. i asked my son to read through this thread and he totally agrees now that he should pay for his housekeeping. i think it was just a shock that he went from a boy to a man overnight and now has to pay his way. i reminded him that the student maintanance grant was to cover his "keep" and we have both agreed on £35 a week. He is hoping not to touch his student loan and save it towards his third year when he has to move to away and live in student accommodation.0

If your son gets paid weekly or monthly from his part time earnings straight into his bank account I would ask him to set up a monthly standing order so his rent is paid without you having to ask him. Or possibly you could get him to give you a cheque when his loan installments go in, with my daughter its three times a year.
Another thing to keep an eye on is your phone bills. My son uses the land land to make mobile calls so when the bill comes in each month I check it for mobile calls and he has to pay for these.
Also worth getting a little cash book and keeping a record of what he has paid you and when and if he has to ask you for bus money etc.
If you think his finances will stand it, it might alos be worth asking for an added £10 or so each week and saving this ammount for him - maybe get him to open an ISA so that at the end of the fianl year he will have a lump sum.
It does feel heartless and cruel, asking for rent and board but it is the fairest way of doing things.“Create all the happiness you are able to create; remove all the misery you are able to remove. Every day will allow you, --will invite you to add something to the pleasure of others, --or to diminish something of their pains.”0 -

Nooooooo!! Don't buy books - well new ones anyway!!! The library at Uni's are perfecty adequate and if they're like my old one you can reserve and renew online. Also a lot of the student re-sell their books back to the librearies to be sold at at about 1/3 of the cost to new students - get him to check that out. Also Ebay can give you some bargains!!!
Never ever buy new books!!!Noli nothis permittere te terere

I think yes you have to charge him about £30 per week, im 27 and when i was at uni living at home i had to give my mum £25 per week board plus one week out of 4 i had to do the food shopping, i had my own phoneline in my room and had to pay for that plus any other bits like toiletries and stuff, when i eventually moved out when i was 20 i was ready to pay bills and stuff like that. It a good learning experience.
I have a friend who is 27 and moved out when we begun uni at 18, she moved into a flat once we finished and she called me one day asking what council tax was, cause she didnt have to pay it while she was studying and had never heard of it!!
By the way make sure he gets the certificate for you so u get youre discount on your council tax0
