in Water bills
Apologies for what may be a silly question, but I live in a top floor flat in a converted house, and was told a few years ago that I couldn't have a standard water meter fitted (an engineer came out and came to this conclusion, not exactly sure of the reason but I presume it's to do with a shared water supply). Does it follow that a smart meter can't be installed then?

What do you mean by a 'smart water meter'?
There are water meters that can be read remotely, but they are still fitted on the water supply inlet to the property.
If a water meter cannot be fitted, are you aware that you can elect for an assessed charge?0 -
A smart meter would replace whatever meter is already there so if you have your own gas or electric meters these can be replaced.
You may be able to get an assesed charge for water if you cannot have a meter.0 -
I'm on a Single Occupier tariff - just wondering if it follows that smart metering will not be possible owing to not being able to have a typical water meter installed.0

Smart meters are for gas and electricity. Not water.0

They are for water too! Thames Water are due to install them in my area very soon.0

As stated in post#2, smart water meters are an adaption of the remote reading meter now used by meter readers in some situations.
I have an internal water meter. However with an extension I had built, it wasn't easy to access the meter to read. So a remote reading meter was fitted and now the meter reader does not even need to enter the house.
The Smart meter will simply enable the property owner to read and monitor the water consumption.
In your case if a normal meter cannot be fitted, neither will a 'smart' meter be fitted.0
