Thanks for the responses so far, I didn't explain myself very well. When I first used the weed killer I sprayed it on the weeds. Quite a few weeks passed with no joy in clearing them. That said, perhaps the rain washed it away? Anyhow, I think I shall go with the suggestion of salt as I have that in abundance!!

I spent around 6 hours scraping out the weeds between the slabs on my driveway (it's comprised of 3 large concrete slabs) and there's is a good half an inch gap between each slab.

Have you thought of filling the gaps?

Even if they are, you could use something like this -

    That wouldn't stop expansion.

e seeds or use a weedkiller that persists in the soil. Unfortunately the EU banned these.

Evoke Article 50 already. I want to get rid of some persistent weeds by 2020 at least. Grrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Not just EU banning, sodium chlorate went because of IRA terrorism use in bomb making, UK Government

I have a great solution for you, reasonably wildlife friendly too!! Read about it a couple months ago and tried it on my patio weeds and it's amazing :D

A simple bottle of white vinegar from Wilkos, £1.00!
    http://www.wilko.com/multi-purpose-cleaners/wilko-original-white-vinegar-trigger-spray-750ml/invt/0335206

Spray it on the patio weeds on a sunny day and the weeds are shrivelled up and dead a couple days later! It worked on creeping buttercup, grass, rosebay etc, though i'll admit it didn't kill the horsetail, but then not much does!

Only use it on patios and gravel though, not soil, apparently vinegar affects the soil, though not sure how true that is.

i bought a 'weed wand' for £15 with 4 cans of gas, basically a mini flame thrower you burn the weeds and they die off naturally, got it from Amazon

They messed with the composition of it before the ban, adding a fire retardant. It was still on the shelves till around 2010, well after the IRA had ceased to become a threat

Once, there was hardly a schoolboy in the land who didn't know what fun could be had with sodium chlorate + sugar. Enterprising lads at my school used to sell it by the matchbox-full.

Few knew how it could explode under pressure, as in packing water pipe to make explosives......or even the school railings. :o

I'd 2nd the white vinegar. Great for small areas & no danger to pets, or wildlife.
