Ferry cancellation - eu rules

I've read the EU rules on ferry cancellations but cannot work out exactly what applies (if anything).

Our ferry was cancelled 5 days in advance due to mechanical problems. We could change dates or get a full refund. As we were already on holiday (we'd taken a different route out) and didn't want to lose a day (and the couldn't offer the same class of cabin if we rebooked) we got a full refund and drove an additional 400 miles and booked an alternative ferry route.

Is anything due in these circumstances? We're not massively out of pocket, not enough to be worth paying the excess on travel insurance, but we did end up paying for phone calls abroad / data trying to sort out alternative travel arrangements
