Vitamin D Deficiency

Hello all,
I was just wondering if anyone has any experience of Vitamin D Deficiency. I was referred to a Rheumatology consultant and, as well as a couple of diagnoses I was expecting, I was also told my Vitamin D levels were basically zero! Luckily, it would seem this could explain the symptoms my GP and physio thought could be fibromyalgia so I'm actually glad it's the Vit D causing the problems because at least that's something that can be fixed. I certainly didn't want it to be fibromyalgia on top of my other problems.
I'm on supplements at the moment and I was just curious if anyone knew how long it takes for the symptoms of the deficiency to clear. I'm still very tired and have a lot of bone and muscle pain at the moment. I've been on the supplements about 5 weeks.
I've found it quite difficult to find much about the process of recovering from Vit D Deficiency online so far.
TIA :)

  • I had this a few years ago and was staggered to realise many of my symptoms were due to Vitamin D deficiency. I had no idea it could be so serious.
I have since spoken to lots of night workers and you do find greater numbers among this group. The old hand always recommend supplements to new starters.

It took me a couple of months to recover my strength and it was such a relief. I always take a Vit D as a supplement now.
    So, keep taking the tablets:)

I've just been prescribed Vit D supplements by my doctor, seems I was deficient, although I didn't really have any specific symptoms that I hadn't put down to reaching 50.

I've only been taking them a week so still too early to tell whether I'll feel any difference. I do have fatigue, especially in the afternoon and achy joints in the morning, it would be nice if those went.

  • I have all these symptoms too and had put them down to my diabetes and repeated thyroiditis and back/neck problems - however tests have shown that I am Vit D deficient almost zero according to my GP.

I have been on Fultium D 3200IU 80 micrograms since 12 May - this will be for 12 weeks then I will take a lesser maintenance dose for life.

I haven't noticed any difference in my symptoms and still feel exhausted all the time especially in the afternoons. I would be interested to know how long before others have noticed any improvement

I take much larger doses than the NHS offers patients and I'm still not overdosing.

That's interesting, I also have a referral for an over active thyroid.

I had an overactive thyroid and now have thin bones, I lived in ignorant bliss of this until recently when X rayed for something else. I have to take prescription strength AdCal-D3 twice a day. Reassuringly told if I fell I would break bones. Thanks.

It's featured on the morning BBC news in the past week. In short, what they said was: In the UK most people won't get enough Vit D between April and October, from natural sunlight. People should try to get more from natural sunlight. But, it still probably won't be enough. In any case it won't be enough through the winter.

Some foods contain Vitamin D, but you can't ever hope to eat enough each day to get up to the right amount.

The 'expert' said that all Brits should take Vit D supplements from birth, forever.

I was told that because I work in an industrial building with no natural light and always wear suncream when I go out in the summer I would not get enough vit D naturally, as even though I eat a balanced diet this is not enough to get the levels needed

When they were talking about the article Pastures mentioned, i'm sure they said although most Vitamin D can be got from being in the sun, it's not always the case. If you've put cream on to protect you from the sun, that can also block the Vitamin D.
