I hope this is the right forum.

I've got a Pentax K30 and I'm looking to upgrade my equipment, the reason being is that I'm finding it hard to find accessorie's for the Pentax and I have been looking further afield.

I've been looking at the Canon EOS 750D, and the Nikon D5300. I'm a bit confused about which is the better one, I do landscapes and documenting and I don't know which one to choose. can you help me decide please? :undecided

Both come with 18-55m lenses.

Many thanks.

Before someone with a bit more knowledge comes along and can help, I can only suggest you head over the the Photography Blog website and check out their reviews of both cameras:

I'd have a think about what lenses you're likely to buy then find what suitable lenses Canon and Nikon offer to see if either suits you better that way - both have decent lens ranges but they have strengths and weaknesses. As a simple example, Nikon have a really nice little 50mm equivalent fast prime for under £150 with the 35mm F1.8 while Canon have some better telephoto options.

I'd also look in any other accessories you're interested in using such as flash options, portrait grips etc.

Also if possible it's worth trying each camera in hand, some people much prefer the feel of one camera over another and since many other aspects are similar that is what they choose the camera on.

Canon generally have the advantage for action and Nikon for landscapes/ low light.

In reality there is little to choose between them and it probably comes down to which you feel most comfortable with.

Personally I would get the Nikon but that is because I hate the canon menu system, others prefer it though.

I have used Clifton Cameras on a couple of occasions with zero problems.

I have had both and various other brands over the years, go to a real camera shop and have a play, take an sd card ( or whatever the camera takes) and take some shots to compare. Also if you know you want other lenses consider buying body only as kit lenses are not the best.
Hope you are happy with your choice..

I actually own and use a D5300 and can confirm that it's pretty good. I haven't used a 750D but I have owned and used both brands over the years and can readily confirm what most are saying - there isn't a great deal between the two brands, so try them both and see which suits your way of working better.

One small caveat. I find the D5300's auto focusing frustratingly unreliable, but that is a criticism I would level at all the current DSLRs I have tried. Contrary to what the makers would have you believe, autofocus isn't perfect yet by a long way and you would be advised to take multiple shots (electrons are cheap) of important subjects.

On the positive side, the D5300's tilt and twist rear screen is a tremendously useful feature. I hadn't realised how much so until I had been using it for a few months.

Good luck with whichever you choose.

Although PDAF is not flawless and can need adjustment plus the comparatively huge sensor makes accurate focus more critical, any DSLR should be capable of accurate AF (aside from those with known issues) barring any possible negative factors when taking the shot. I wouldn't accept a DSLR that couldn't consistently autofocus, one of the main reasons I went with Nikon D7xx DSLRs is their high speed and accurate AF which can nail shots in a speed I didn't think even possible. Those do have a different AF system compared to the DX consumer models but I've not seen any reviewers or users highlighting poor AF on the D5xxx series.

You might want to read the archived comments section on DPR. There have been endless user remarks about focus issues of many kinds with these and other current DSLRs.
