A weeks food shopping for £20

  • I live on my own and only learnt to cook/budget/buy when i moved out for uni.

    Tips:
bread/bread items such as breakfast waffles, muffins, pancakes, buns etc are always reduced. buy them reduced! I never pay £1+ for breakfast muffins they are usually reduced to around 30p. Freeze them until you want them. (invest in a freezer - its a god send).

Frozen veg - always. most veg can be frozen if you do buy it fresh (i get babycorn on reduced to clear and freeze them). If your buying fresh fruit you can always freeze any bits that are about to go off if you don't get chance to eat it all. then use them in smoothies, porridge, baking etc.

Aldi/Lidl/Iceland/Farmfood is best for meat - so much cheaper than tesco/etc and usually just as good.

Cook in bulk and freeze up meals (i always keep chinese takeout boxes and freeze meals in those - or icecream tubs. cleaned out of course!).

Always buy less when you are starting out. Until you know exactly how much you are going to eat (or plan to a T). It's better to go to the shops twice a week (as long as they are nearby) then spend £££ to waste half of it.

Invest in staples - herbs, spices, salt, pepper etc - look up recipes for your favourite meals and draw up a list. And own-branded products are sooo much cheaper than branded.

Also invest in a slow cooker. You can get a small one for £15-20 and they use very little electricity. Really good for curries, casseroles etc as you can use cheaper cuts of meat. Bung all of the stuff in the pot in the morning and then you have a hot meal (plus plenty for leftovers) for when you walk in the door in the evening.
