First link that came up on a Google search that explained what HAN was, unlike your link.

Just because you don't like it doesn't make it spam.

Same as just because I don't like your aggressive posting style doesn't make you a troll.

Not true. The link went to a page that gave an explanation about HAN, which is partly what the OP asked for. Your disagreeing with an overall point of view being promoted by a website doesn't make it spam.

Here is a couple of paragraphs of lies from that Han link from stopsmartmetersUK about what a smart meter actually does.
" Inside many smart meters is the ability to connect wirelessly with home appliances "
"Think about it: an RF transmitter capable of transmitting hundreds of feet, installed and transmitting from the moment they are plugged in, in each and every appliance in your home. Here’s a story about one person who tried unsuccessfully to purchase an appliance without the RF transmitter."
I agree that stuff coming out of stopsmartmeters should be regarded as spam and I hope forum members stop posting links to the website even if it did come up third on google in a search .It is giving people the idea that a smart meter is a trojon horse which has sneakily invaded your iron/electric cooker etc. Stopsmartmeters tells more lies than the Remain camp did !

My link explained exactly what it was, a link between the meter and the In Home Display. What my link didn't do was fill the readers head with sensationalised horse manure.

I'm guessing everybody on that site is living inside a Faraday cage, since that is the only true way they will isolate themselves from RF.

Hi donna, it may not look the same, but the HAN light/function will be the same.

The important thing to remember is that your smart meter is not trying to kill you, despite what some internet sources may claim.

That gadget is the In House Display monitor. These things are usually plugged in for a few weeks after the smart meter is fitted then stuffed away in a drawer forever. It is "married " to the smart meter. Once you have got to know what various appliances cost to run its job is done in that respect. It also knows your exact tariff so you can see how much you are spending , daily , weekly or monthly. The IHD used by British Gas does` nt make any noise at all.
I am only familiar with the Landys Gyr meter used by BG, Eon use it as well and I ve seen First Utility using it too, but none of these meters should be making a sound as it would drive people bonkers if you could hear it beeping away all night.
Smart meters for domestic customers are also made by Siemens I believe . I hav`nt seen one of these in the North of England, and Ovo/Utilita use smart meters made by Liberty.
Red lights on meters are used to see the amount of electricity being used. The faster it flashes the more electricity is used.
its not the ihd as you call it where the sound comes from. the main meter has a small white box right next to it which i guess has the job of transmitting the info to the company and to your ihd. it is this transmitter that has 3 green lights on it. WAN, HAN and i cant remember the other. 2 of the lights dont flash and are permanently on. the HAN light is flashing and that seems to be the source of the sound.
so is it perfectly ok to turn off the ihd without any problems? would this stop the HAN light flashing on the transmitter or would that carry on regardless? my whole issue wouldnt be an issue if the meter wasnt in a cupboard within the living room.

Npower are supposed to be offering smart functions which should not even upset the nutjobs at StopsmartmetersUK.
Npower are going to offer three levels of smart operation. The lowest is one reading a month automatically sent. I think the other options are readings sent weekly (edit: daily ) and then the full on one with reads every half hour.
I have looked for the meter make and model which Npower are using and have not been able to find it. Its most likely a Siemens meter.
You will have to get Npower out to that meter, its no good with that racket on 24 hrs a day.

I thought it was daily reads, not weekly for that option.

And it is worth pointing out to people that even on the half hourly reads they are not collected every half hour, the meter stores them and they are collected either daily or monthly.

I do miss my smart meter after moving! Maybe I will move to npower and see if they give me one. My meter is around 2 months out of cert and scottish power don't seem to care!

Npower do offer 3 different options. We went with the middle one but then while talking to the installer it sounded like they are ignoring the 3 options and just applying the top one.
