we had our smart meters installed yesterday. last night i was watching tv and noticed i could hear a quiet sound that could be described as sounding like an alarm. it is very quiet and not noticable during the day but at night when its quieter and you want to watch the tv it spoils it. i ended up having to use head phones while watching tv. i looked at the electric meter and there was a green light flashing near the letters HAN. it seemed like the sound was coinciding with this. is this a fault or is it normal. if its a fault what should we do. is there any way to turn the sound off.

You need to complain to your energy provider, modern smart meters should be silent.

I have never heard of any smart electric meters in the UK which could connect with anything in the occupiers house other than the smart gas meter, edit..and the IHD of course.
I ve seen thousands of electric smart meters but the domestic ones are all Landys and Gyr E470 models and every one is silent as are all meters.
Sometimes a quiet squeaking noise can be heard from a metric gas meter when the gas is being used. Its a plastic cog rotating and its not dangerous but it is slightly annoying.

Both meters connect to a gadget that gives you info about usage etc. The info does seem to be all correct on it therefore there isn't a loss of connection issue. As I said though there is a green light next to the letters HAN flashing. I have no idea whether that is normal or not or if it means anything. What is coinciding with this is what is annoying. It is a very low volume sound that I guess sounds like an alarm. It is that quiet that I dont think my dad has noticed it yet. It is more annoying at night when there are less outside noises to drown it out. There seems to be a lack of info around. I googled it and can only find some info about a red light, not green.
For all I know there could be a way to solve it myself but theres nothing online listing potential issues with ways to deal with them yourself. I hoped there would be someone clued up here. I dont want to have to resort to calling them as I hate calling big organisations.

That gadget is the In House Display monitor. These things are usually plugged in for a few weeks after the smart meter is fitted then stuffed away in a drawer forever. It is "married " to the smart meter. Once you have got to know what various appliances cost to run its job is done in that respect. It also knows your exact tariff so you can see how much you are spending , daily , weekly or monthly. The IHD used by British Gas does` nt make any noise at all.
I am only familiar with the Landys Gyr meter used by BG, Eon use it as well and I ve seen First Utility using it too, but none of these meters should be making a sound as it would drive people bonkers if you could hear it beeping away all night.
Smart meters for domestic customers are also made by Siemens I believe . I hav`nt seen one of these in the North of England, and Ovo/Utilita use smart meters made by Liberty.
Red lights on meters are used to see the amount of electricity being used. The faster it flashes the more electricity is used.

That's because that link was provided to promote that stupid website, rather than actually help you with anything.

Since promoting using this forum is against the rules, we should probably start marking these posts as SPAM.

Not true. The link went to a page that gave an explanation about HAN, which is partly what the OP asked for. Your disagreeing with an overall point of view being promoted by a website doesn't make it spam.

And there was no 'agenda free' source of that information available?
