Plus NET or BT?

Hi All

Due to move into our 1st home, we can only have ADSL.

Plus Net are doing fibre broadband 24-32meg at £31.98 p/m but BT are doing infinity 2 upto 52meg for £29.98 per month.

So my question goes is it worth going with BT for the extra speed (is it guaranteed?) even if plus net leases lines from them?

Thanks

Please note the words UP TO, regardless of their adverts it is down to the distance you are from the fibre cabinet, as the last link is on copper wires.

If you have a telephone number for the place you are moving to, put that into "check availability" on the thinkbroadband site, that should give you an idea, also ask your prospective neighbours what they get.

No point in paying for up to 52meg if the copper lines will not support that speed.

The other point is you say you can only get ADSL if that is correct you will not get fibre. ADSL MAX speeds up to! 8Mbs, ADSL2+ up to! 22Mbs -ish

So really they are false advertising? Especially BT?

  • The other difference is that Plusnet's cost after month 6 is their standard cost whereas BT's cost will rocket by an extra £10 per month or more. Obviously you can switch at that time but being with Plusnet would give you more flexibility to wait for one of the better deals as they definitely come and go. I think Plusnet fibre is £7.49 for the whole 18 months if you use Moneysupermarket (increasing to £14.99 after) or at least it was.

Edit: Yes £7.49, covered on MSE http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/phones/cheap-broadband#plusnetfibre

You really got to watch BT. Their prices rocket after the offer ends.

You really got to be on the ball. Even paying 1-2 months will be expensive!
    Not worth the risk!

"Up to" is not false advertising, it is the nature of the technology that allows data to be sent over a single twisted pair designed originally only for voice calls. The throughput you get is dependent on line length and quality and while estimates can be made, the only way to know what you'll get is to connect up the equipment in the house and try it.

If you want a guaranteed "speed" you need a leased line (start from circa £400/month).

.....but availability of fibre MAY be limited on the cabinet that your new hone is connected to, the only way to be sure is to order fibre for the actual phone line.
