Hi, i would be grateful for some advice. I have looked all over and can not find an answer to this question. I am a registered carer for my wife who claims pip. I am registered self employed and simply declare my carers allowance as my annual income. I have no other income. Can i claim working tax credit for 30+ hours a week as i am recieving taxable income for working 35 hours a week. I would be grateful for any advice/info on this. Many thanks

No you can't.0 -
Receiving carers allowance is not a business. You should de-register as self employed.0

I am not allowed to post links to websites but the following is from the Gov UK website, the section on working for yourself and what counts as employment so google it.
Running a business
You’re probably self-employed if you:- run your business for yourself and take responsibility for its success or failure
- have several customers at the same time
- can decide how, where and when you do your work
- can hire other people at your own expense to help you or to do the work for you
- provide the main items of equipment to do your work
- are responsible for finishing any unsatisfactory work in your own time
- charge an agreed fixed price for your work
- sell goods or services to make a profit (including through websites or apps)
Carers Allowance recipients can take on additional employment so long as they continue meet the terms of claiming it. They can earn no more than £110 a week (after taxes, care costs while you’re at work and 50% of what you pay into your pension).
So you have scope to take on genuine self employment or regular employment on top of your carers allowance.0 -
If your only income is CA then you are most definitely NOT self employed are not working. You are receiving a benefit for caring for your wife.
There is no need for you to be registered as self employed so you should de-register to avoid any confusion or complication. You shouldn't be declaring your CA as self employed income as it isn't.
As you are not working/employed you're not entitled to WTC.0 -
As others have said, you are not self-employed and need to de-register. Carer's allowance is taxable, but as it is your only income it will be covered by your personal allowance.
Tax credits amended their regulations a few years ago for this situation - so time spent caring is not counted as hours towards the WTC threshold.

Yes, you can be self employed or be an employee and receive CA, providing you meet the criteria. You cannot use the hours spent caring as self employment though. It is a totally different thing.
By all means continue to be registered as self employed if you have your own business. What you cannot do is include your hours spent as a carer in your self employment. The two are completely separate.0
