BT Internet - New home

I have just got off the phone with BT who have said that they can only offer speeds of 1-3MB in our new house, which we are due to move into next week. They say that as the cabinet is full and all cables are being used, there is no guarantee as to when we can get BT infinity back (currently enjoy speeds of 30MB+ in our current house).

Does anyone have any idea what 1-3MB is like? Will watching TV online such as BT online and SkyGO be possible at those speeds?

They also claim that any other provider will have the same result as they must use BT cables. Is this true, or can other providers offer faster speeds through different means?

Many thanks in advance!

I have 3.9 meg and they both work fine , I'm sure they say 2 meg is a minimum for live streaming

For BT sport the minimum 400Kb then up to a pin sharp 2-3Mb

Sky box will download regardless although slowly on catchup

All suppliers use Bt pairs so will hit the same problem , if virgin high speed is not available then you are stuck

I had the same 1-3 quoted and ended up with 1 Mbps.

Usable on Computer and phone but the smart TV would not work with it. Eg Iplayer, YouTube.

There is no hope for downloading films at 1 Mbps.

Personally if you have a 4G signal I would look at getting a sim to wifi unit. Eg osprey. Or search mifi.

You don't want to be committed to 1 Mbps for 12m if you want to use it for TV.

Look to see if you can get virgin media in your area.
They use their own cables independent of BT openreach and will be a minimum of 50Mbps
  • Thank you very much for your replies although Virgin Media is not available in my area...

Will have to get back on it and look for another option!

    Thanks again

You won't like the cost of watching TV on 4G. Do some research before jumping off the queue for an FTTC port.

You may get the high end of the estimate which will support streaming or it may be the low end in which case you'll be limited to watching downloads apart from the old fashioned ways of live and recorded of course.

Says someone who hasn't lived with a 1Mbps connection :rotfl:

I tried downloading a 30min programme from iplayer to my iPad.

I was must have taken over 2 hours ! It's really not worth it!

It's worth looking into data sims from EE.

You aren't paying the £18 line rental for starters

I've lived through dialup at 9600bps up to ~ 34kbps followed by a magnificent 512Kb "broadband" then on to more usable connections. You certainly can't expect video on demand on 1Mbps but there is absolutley nothing stopping you download stuff today and watching it next day while downloading the day afters programs. TBH at those sort of speeds I'd stick to recordings and live broadcasts though = that's exactly what I do at this holiday caravan despite having quite decent 4G because the low monthly allowance I get would be chewed up in a few days if I used it to stream or download video.

Oh yeah. I remember dial up.

If you get a data only sim they are better value for money.
