Use and habit - parking

The house we are buying has a parking bay area out the front with six unallocated spaces, but as the vendor and the third house in the row hasn't had a car for years the neighbour has got very used to parking all the families cars in the bay (he has four teens all with cars, his wife and his own)

Would you just rock up an park on the day you move in knowing it was going to cause friction?

What is your thoughts on managing this, if any?

Note: there IS allocated parking for all three houses however, due to layout, we are the furthest point from it (5mins walk) there is no other parking. So if you don't get a space you have to drive back to the allocated parking and then walk back.

We are two car household so there will always be two cars without a space every night.

If it's unallocated parking then, yes, I'd just rock up on moving day and park there ;) You have as much right to park as they do.

Presumably the house has had a For Sale sign? So the neighbours will be expecting somebody new ...

True, i had forgotten that! lol

Its just one of those things, even though you know you don't have a right to something, if you have had it your own way for years i can see them getting disgruntled.

Esp as its going to be a pain in the rear every single night for two people.

Yes but teenagers have younger legs ...

Seriously, why should you be the two people for whom it's a "pain in the rear"; having six cars is very unusual, and surely they must realise that.

What is the status of this parking bay i.e. public road, privately-owned "visitor" spaces which the house share, or something else?

Seriously? You are worried that one house thinks they have the right to park 6 cars and you none? Even at 4:2 they are doing well!

What do the deeds of the property have to say about the parking?

Unallocated, but 2 spaces per property?

Unless you desperately want that house just walk away and forget it. Im in a similar position. A cul de sac of 11 houses each with 2 allocated spaces directly outside each house.

Some of the home owners stick to their own but some dont and many a time I have come home at night after finishing work at 11.15 to find a strange car outside our house. People have visitors but you never know which house they are at and at that time you cant be knocking on doors to find out. Visitors dont give a damn about the spaces belonging to the houses and will just park wherever is nearest to the house they are going to.

Then you get the home owners with just one car who will always park int he middle or their 2 spaces making it impossible for anyone else to park in the spare space.

There is no way to put signage up or mark the bays and they are all open plan gardens with no drives.

Every time you go out its a toss up if you will be able to park when you get home.

Its not fun, its so frustrating and you are best avoiding buying anywhere where parking is an issue.

I cant stress enough- find somewhere else.

Before I buy anywhere I always make a point of talking to all the neighbours. Knock on their door, introduce yourself and bring up the subject naturally....

The deeds show the house and two allocated spaces in the parking area 5 mins away.

The unallocated six are in a 'bay' across from the three houses in a cul de sac. so no one really needs to be parking in the road unless they are visiting or being at home.
