Another Stray Cat

I have another cat turned up in the farmyard ten days ago and appears to have moved in (the timing is spooky, as it was 4 days after my elderly cat passed).
He/she is living in the undergrowth of the lilac bush and doesn't appear to move from there! Gradually getting more friendly, can now touch top of their head.
I have a week off work this week so humane trap being used before a trip to the vets to check for a microchip.
I will check with the vets, but just wondered if anyone knew the legal position on neutering a cat which technically isn't yours?
And I know the rules, here is picture

Cat doesn't look in too bad a condition, just extremely scared.
It might have a home, owners who are looking for it. Have you put up pictures advertising a found cat?
Well done for looking out for it and planning to take to vets for checking micro chip but I think you are a long way from having to consider if it needs neutering (it might already be done).
Good luck - keep us posted.0 -
I've put photos on a local community group on facebook, and have asked around the village. No near neighbours are missing a cat (though next door is half a mile away).
I guess the reason I am asking about neutering so quickly is because the last cat that turned up in the yard was a girl who hadn't been neutered, and yes you can guess what happened. I know he/she is likely to be a boy given the colouring, but we've had two female gingers over the years who have surprised us.
But agree, first thing is trap/vets for microchip and then decide what to do.
He/she is scared, but is eating well. He/she hisses when I go to feed, but then lets me touch top of head so slowly getting there.0 -
Aw! Lovely looking cat. He looks very like one of my sons cats.
He does look like a pet doesn't he? Not feral, or been fending for himself for too long I would guess.
But who knows? Would you like to offer him a home OP if the vet doesn't find a microchip?
P.s. I've heard many people say that cats seem to know when there is a vacancy!Norn Iron Club member 4730 -

If no chip and no one comes forward.... then it seems to be fate and he's picked me0 -
What a beauty!
I'm glad you asked this - a tom has been hanging around here intermittently since the winter, he'll sleep in my shed for a week or so then disappear for a few days, I have seen him heading into woods 1/4 of a mile up the road. I think it's highly unlikely anyone would have had a very ordinary black and white moggy microchipped but not castrated, but I've also wondered about getting him done if he's going to be around a lot. TBH if the cat was to go back to its owners after you'd had it neutered, they wouldn't know who had had it done anyway!0 -
JCS1 that's how we ended up with picallili and seem to be developing Stripey.
It's also the route taken to my MIL developing our inherited tomcat.
It's nice when they choose you (picallili wouldn't stay I the nice place sorted for her, kept breaking g out and coming here)0 -
Just managed to get close enough to pick up.... cat can hiss/spit and wriggle free. But hopefully means I won't have to resort to trap to get them to vet, just need to keep cat box nearby.
Cat only sulked for two minutes before coming for his/her food0 -
Oh that's good, sounds like he is used to people then.
We had a one eared ginger stray called Vincent for a while, I trapped him for neutering and unfortunately he was so traumatised that he bolted upon release never to be seen again.
I'd have been quite happy for him to live in his shelter In the yard and feed him , I knew he was never going to be a domestic pet but I was sad he left and I can't imagine he lasted too much longer.Norn Iron Club member 4730 -
I thought he was eating a lot, turns out I have two ginger cats moved in..... apologies for the picture, it's difficult to get one of the two of them together0

How lovely, and one of them is looking straight at the camera.
Had to smile though when you realised there were twins... you must have nearly done a double flip.
And bless you for taking them in.....make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0
