It seems it can also depend on the car itself, some will run exactly same - branded or supermarket fuel.
I have a friend, who works for Sainsbury and so used their fuel, when discussing the rough running with his garage was advised to avoid the supermarket fuel, which solved his problem.
Another friend always used Shell, as it was his nearest and he collected the loyalty points - he once had to fill up with a different brand, and was surprised how much better his car ran.0 -

Takman , if your car is giving the same BHP now as 192,000 , I will eat my hat
Well you better have a tasty hat then!.
Like i said i had my car on a Dyno on Wednesday and they result was 100.58BHP which is what Vauxhall state as the amount it came out the factory with. I was going to get it remapped but unfortunately they were unable to do it due to the module on the fuel pump but at least i got a free Dyno run!.0 -
Supermakret vs "Branded fuel" the debate rumbles on.
Vectra diesel, nearly 150k miles covered, predominantly with Asda fuel, never missed a beat.
Insignia, now completed 70k+ miles in 2 years, again, predominantly on Asda fuel, still never missed a beat.
Delivers a consistent 55mpg+ (calculated properly, brim to brim style) and data built up from every single refuel over life of the vehicle (to me).Life isn't about the number of breaths we take, but the moments that take our breath away. Like choking....0 -
For some reason my cars have never got on with Morrisons (diesel) fuel, take that as you will.
Same here when I fill up with morrisons diesel, my astra seems a little sluggish and flat, But when i fill up with shell i tend to get better mpg plus car feels more responsive so for the sake of a few £'s i just fill with shell plus its closer than morrisons“People are caught up in an egotistic artificial rat race to display a false image to society. We want the biggest house, fanciest car, and we don't mind paying the sky high mortgage to put up that show. We sacrifice our biggest assets our health and time, We feel happy when we see people look up to us and see how successful we are”

aliEnRIK you need to do this test blind - as in you drive the car the same all the time, but SOMEONE ELSE needs to fill the car, so that you don't know where the fuel is from, otherwise your foot might just be a bit lighter when you drive out of Sainsbury's to help you confirm your suspicions.0

ALL petrols are the same , they all come out of the ground , they are all refined to meet Uk BSI standards , they are all stored in the same tanks at the refinery
HOWEVER
additive packs are added at the point of filling , those are specific to the company selling the petrol
those are in most cases secret , and its upto each company to formulate the best
Totally agree. Having worked for one of the Majors for 26 years at various distribution terminals this description is bang on. I would also add that most supermarket fuel does not contain additives, supermarket filling stations displaying one of the major oil companies
Logos, IE the Shell Pectern or BP sun, do contain that oil companies additives.0 -
I have a C-Max TDci on a '14' plate. I used to fill up with Tesco and Morrisons diesel, then I tried Shell V-power, from a filling station nearer to home. The results were surprising: more MPG and better acceleration, smoother running.
I could not believe this, so I began to alternate fuels. I ran the tank down to just below an indicated 60 miles, then filled up at Morrisons. The MPG dropped by 3 according to the onboard computer and significantly lower than that when I calculated the mileage at the next tankfull, which was Shell V-Power again. I did this in a split cycle of 10 fill-ups and the V-Power continued to lift my MPG by one or two decimal points, after the initial jump.Nowadays I only use V-Power, except when returning from holiday, when I used a motorway tank and, sure enough, acceleration, running and MPG worsened. When I first had the car, I was getting 38MPG, which went to 41 with Morrisons fuel. Latest figure is 46 MPG, and I may be 71 but I do not hang about!
As an ex-workshop foreman I was intrigued by this, so I investigated. Apparently the additives in V-Power force the fuel to burn more efficiently. This improves everything: MPG (the engine needs slightly less fuel to supply the same power) Acceleration (more efficient burn) smooth running (cleaner fuel).
Yes it is more expensive in comparison to each tankfull, but it actually gets more out for the same quantity of fuel. For me it's a no-brainer.
And before anyone speaks about the Shell station being closer: I worked it out per tankfull over the same mileage. The Morrisons station is at the supermarket where we do a big shop every 3 or 4 weeks and it is almost all flat country for a 22 mile drive. The Shell station is just 3.5 miles along a bypass with 4 steep hills. Incidentally, the first hill is very long and very steep and the car sails up it at any speed I wish. Nothing that anyone can say here will pick holes in my story, everyting i did was calculated to disprove the fact that the V-Power made no difference. I was a sceptic.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

I was always absolutely convinced that "fuel is fuel" (to be fair, I had previously missed the point about additives varying)...
Following a few cut-outs that no garage could diagnose, a friend suggested switching to Esso (from supermarket fuel) for our 2010 Mondeo, and also using Miller's additive (the stuff in a bottle from Halfords that you add to your tank).
I've honestly been shocked. We previously got upper 30s around town, and close to 50mpg on motorway runs. The highest we ever saw was 52mpg, in Scotland where we did a steady 50mph for a week.
Went on holiday a few weeks ago with Esso and Miller's (we'd already been using these for a couple of months). Big motorway trip to Skye, then touring around. We averaged 58mpg and went over 60mpg for a while on the way up, which I believe is above the advertised max mpg of our car. Around town is a similar story - we're getting 5-10mpg more than ever before (we've had the car for five years).
I don't know how much of that is the switch from Tesco to Esso, and how much is the effect of the Miller's. I suspect it's more the Miller's??
I haven't done the maths to see if the cost of the Miller's is worth it, in terms of what it then saves us in diesel cost. I suspect it's not worth it, financially, as the fuel saving isn't that much. For us it was more about the cut-outs freaking us out (one happened at speed). Touch wood, we haven't had one since. I'm still utterly unconvinced that we've actually solved the cut-outs, as I think they were an intermittent electrical/sensor problem, but hey - hasn't happened again so I'll take it.0 -

Nah. Ever since I got my first car with an actual MPG gauge on it I have been driving the same. I get your point, but I dont need to blind test myself as I already believe what im doing and if I am wrong, I dont really care. I posted purely to see how others get on (Diesel seems to have a definitive difference):idea:0
