It may come in a BP tanker but that doesn't mean it's exactly the same fuel mix that's delivered to BP stations.

There's only eight or so fuel depots in the uk. You see all the differently logo ed tankers queuing up and filling up from the same storage tanks. Whether they put a bottle of soemthing special in after I don't know.

So your trip to Thorpe parl was a longer one that gave better fuel consumption and now your back to your normal driving and the fuel consumption had returned back to the normal average?

Bit like the rolling road tests they show look we test the car and then add this and retest it and its improved the performance. They forget to mention that a lot of cars will have more power on the 2nd run because the ECU will be adding more fuel compared to your everyday drive where it wont be hitting the red line.

No. My trip BACK from thorpe park was far better and if the trip changed my car in anyway it still doesn't fit your theory as when I went to Morrisons it dropped off again (And the trip was months ago)

asda petrol killed my cat , told her smoking was bad for her!

Takman , if your car is giving the same BHP now as 192,000 , I will eat my hat

Is your Sainsburys garage nearer? :-)

No (In fact its further than all of the other 3). But why would that make a difference to my MPG anyway?

My mother used to drive across town to save 1p on fuel...... There's a point where any saving is negated by travelling further.

As for the difference in MPG, try super unleaded from a branded fuel retailer, this probably won't contain any bio-ethanol and will therefore give better MPG, up to around 5%.

I think the first time you think you got more MPG was purely the change in driving and the type of roads. I used to get nearly 10mpg more when I was travelling on motorways.

That's not true at all!. A rolling road is the way that the BHP of a car is tested and that's how the manufacturers come up with the figures they provide when you buy a car.

When your car is tested on a rolling road they produce a graph that shows the BHP and the Torque throughout the Rev range. If you get your car remapped or modified you can then compare the two graphs and see how this has changed throughout the Rev range. So if you want to see how it would affect normal driving you would look at the graph between 1000 - 3000 revs and you will see the improvement.
They don't just improve the total power at maximum revs because the adjust the mapping throughout the Rev range.

We are not talking about remapping, just take any car thats been used for daily city traffic and generally pottering around and a good blast on a rolling road will have the ECU altering the fuelling to match the current conditions.

AKA... Italian tuneup.... Giving a car a good thrash can blow the cobwebs out as they say.

So the first run straight from gentle driving in traffic will be lower than the 2nd and 3rd run where the cars ECU not remapping will alter the fuelling.

The dyno operator wont make any changes but the power will increase.

Don't use Asda, Morrisons or Tesco's, it's the cheap, poor quality stuff (hence why its cheaper). I realised years ago that I got more miles to the gallon from BP and Sainsbury's. Didn't realise that Sainsbury's was BP, so that makes sense now.

    oh thec myth gors on

ALL petrols are the same , they all come out of the ground , they are all refined to meet Uk BSI standards , they are all stored in the same tanks at the refinery

    HOWEVER

additive packs are added at the point of filling , those are specific to the company selling the petrol

those are in most cases secret , and its upto each company to formulate the best

I have been considering it, although I think the cost would outweigh the benefit

Maybe I didnt explain it very well, but the extra 4MPG is since I have been using Sainsburys fuel, it wasnt just the one journey
