Which bank is most lenient ?

Anyone had a basic account with Barclays/HSBC and know how lenient they are when it comes to upgrading to full current account?

DRO ends next month- and will be on credit file for another 5 years.

Want to try to build up a history with a bank, though Barclays were one of my creditors in my DRO so does that mean no credit ever again ?

I have never been DRO but I did read a post here ones that the person who was DRO by HSBC after many years he was still not aloud a bank account.

But what you can do is just apply and see, the computer might say NO :)

I'd probably avoid banks that I owed money to in your situation.

Nationwide are fairly good, also possibly TSB. I'd try one and see how it went, if they only offer a basic account then leave it for a few months and try again.

What do you mean by "lenient"? If you have a questionable credit history that will throw up a question when it comes to upgrading if they search your credit history. It might be argued that if you qualify for an upgrade from a basic account to a better account they would have given you that better account in the first place.

Why must it be Barclays? There are plenty more fish in the proverbial sea. Try applying at Lloyds Bank for a Classic Current Account and if they can't give you an that account they might offer you a Basic Current Account. Lloyds Bank does appear to be better than others where there are a couple of defaults and no CCJs but don't expect an overdraft facility with a basic account.

IMO a basic account is as good if not better than a normal account such as a Lloyds classic account for people who are not good with managing money.
Why do I say that I hear you say? Well the basic account has no charges if they bounce a direct debit or standing order and will not charge you unauthorised fees if you manage to get a debit card transaction through.
An ordinary account - you would be charged unauthorised od fees, return charges for the d/d etc.

If you can apply for a basic account directly which is becoming unlikely with an increasing number of banks. That is the case with Lloyds Bank which I recommended.
  • Cheers everyone for replying. So a 'full' current account without an overdraft would report to the credit agencies exactly the same as a basic account?

For the next 6 years I won't be applying for anything- I just thought using a basic account would make my future applications harder to be accepted for because I've not used a full current account.

Lloyds will open an account (currant) even with bad data

I filled their online forms in , hoping that when declined they would offer a basic account , however they granted a currant account , a quick chat to staff got this changed to a basic account

currant account debit card = contactless
basic account debit card = chip n pin

  • Lloyds were my single biggest creditor in my DRO, so not really an option...

I have a full RBS current account, a TSB one and then two basic accounts with barclays and hsbc.

    I just cant choose.
  • Id say use a basic but keep money in the full current accounts when you can
