Turkey coup? I hope so, it's overdue.

I fail to see how university professors and academics in general who are being purged took part in the military coup attempt.
The current Turkish government is using this to banish secularism from Turkey it seems.0 -

Is it all down to them as he claims or are they convenient scapegoats?
I just can't understand how thousands of public officials and academics are involved in a military coup attempt, and how they came to know who these people were in such a short period of time.
Looks like a crackdown on secularism to me.0 -
I agree it's very strange that they seem to have a list in such a short time and I myself assumed it would have been a coup by people who preferred the more secular way of life but maybe that's because I am conditioned to think that's better?
Could the secularists even do this as I believe they represent only a third of the population?
You may be well be right. I wonder if we'll ever find out the truth?GC Challenge March £55.48/£2000 -
To me (as if anyone in Turkey is worried about what I think :rotfl: ) the test of the next 3 months will be pretty straightforward.
After the 3 months of the state of emergency, will Turkey be more or less secular, will there be more or less freedom of the press and will there be more or less freedom for opposition parties/groups to campaign?

I wonder when the EU will wake up and see the potential disaster on its doorstep. Turkey could have gone the way of Syria (and may yet), torn by civil war. Can you imagine how destabalising that would be on the EU, especially now that Turks have visa free travel to the schengen zone.
It would be interesting to see how many Turks have already moved into the EU to escape the on-going purge. A trickle that could turn into a flood if the purges go to far.0
