If it succeeds, they will not join for a long time to come.
They are decades away from joining and always were.
That Turkey just had a failed coup with tanks on the street, one element of their armed forces attacking another with F16 jets, and chaos with competing elements taking over parts of the national media, only re-enforces the point that the Leave campaign were lying through their teeth when they suggested Turkey was on the brink of joining the EU.“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

More like it puts into sharper focus the foolishness of those at the heart of the European project who opened a new round of talks with Turkey within days of our Brexit vote.''He who takes no offence at anyone either on account of their faults, or on account of his own suspicious thoughts, has knowledge of God and of things devine.''0 -

Stuff and nonsense.
It's idiocy on stilts to suggest that Turkey would be joining the EU in anything less than decades... And regardless, the UK had a veto should we have stayed in the EU, so Turkey could never have joined unless we decided it was in our best interests for them to do so..“The great enemy of the truth is very often not the lie – deliberate, contrived, and dishonest – but the myth, persistent, persuasive, and unrealistic.

I went to bed last night before the coup started so didn't know anything about it until the radio alarm went off at 7am and they were saying it was all over.Liverpool is one of the wonders of Britain,

And yet here's 'call me Dave' stating;"It should continue to be our policy to support Turkey membership wholeheartedly and try to persuade others to do the same."

Yes - because Germany and France do not support Turkey joining the EU (let alone smaller countries like Austria, Cyprus).
For Turkey to join, it would have need to have met all the EU's very detailed legal requirements to become a member of the EU (which it is not close to meeting) and to have the support of all the member states (which it does not have and has never had).0 -

It's a bit rich calling Leave liars when our own PM supported the idea and was actively engaged in pushing for Turkish membership just a short time ago.If I don't reply to your post,

The events in Turkey need some joined up thinking. Not the dribble on this thread so far.
This piece will give you an idea of what the heck is really going on..._
