HSBC Accounts Past Debt

If you had a past debt with HSBC on one of their credit cards 15 years ago (possibly up to around 1000 GBP) and it was written off during a bankruptcy order . . .
Would that stop you from getting a current account in the present day with a reasonably good credit file ?
Seems to be a mixed consensus on which companies do this and even if they do this, if anyone had any understanding on HSBC I would be most grateful.
Thanks

I would suggest the only sure way to find out is to apply.
Anything else would be guesswork.0 -
I encountered financial difficulties a few years ago, one of my creditors being HSBC (Current Account with Overdraft, a Personal Loan and a Credit Card).
Ended up paying it back as part of a Debt Management programme and although it's long since disappeared from my credit files I applied earlier on in the year for a HSBC account with their switching service incentive.
They declined me and although I no longer have the letter I'm sure part of the wording referred to previous account conduct with HSBC.
As jones points out is apply and see what happens but that's my experience. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
I'd agree with the above posters but would add: why take the chance? There are many other banks out there with attractive deals, either for switching incentives or interest payments, so, assuming you haven't defaulted on all of them, then why not open an account with one of the others?

I just quite like HSBC and they're quite global.
Was my preferred bank to be with really.
I already have an account with another bank, just HSBC is where I wanted to be personally, each to their own though.
Will see what they say.Thanks

It's a mixed consensus because no-one really knows. It all depends on how long they keep records. If you write to them and ask them for a copy of information they hold about you they must provide it under the terms of the Data Protection Act. But they might charge a fee for doing that.0 -
Well I entered into my debt management programme back in 2004 and it ended in 2008.
Everything related to then disappeared roughly from my credit reports around this time two years ago. It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -

Many moons ago I defaulted on my student account with HSBC. It was paid off in full and a little while later I applied for an account with them and was accepted but I didn't take up the account as I had a better offer from Lloyds.*The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200
